FREE: broken 853 frame (repairable)

  • It’s a Ribble and I think it’s 853.

    1” head tube // st 58 c-t-c // tt 57.5 c-t-c

The seat cluster is delicate and had fractured on the seat tube (repaired with an alloy sleeve internally) when I got it. I removed the sleeve, took the paint off roughly to see what else was damaged, then put it all to one side.
I believe it’s an easy repair for a kitchen frame builder but after staring at it for years, I realise I am never going to get it repaired and build another bike I won’t ride (even if I finish it).

Collect from Tooting Bec or convince me to wear it into central London : )

  • Ordinarily I would but I’ve got a queue of projects that’s backing up at the moment. Thanks tho

  • you are denying commissions even before becoming an artisan ?!

  • Strong hustle

  • Shame, I could have done a Putney dump-and-run this lunchtime!

BUMP: Now comes with pre-loved/patinated 110mm square taper BB (unfitted) with a lot of life.

  • I would be keen to take it but I am going away for a week tomorrow and I'm not sure that's what you're looking for haha

  • Heh, I’m headed up to north London tonight, but I’m not sure I can wear this all the way to N16.

  • Completely fair enough!

If you still have it when I'm back I would be super happy to come and pick it up after work, it's in Wandsworth so not far from Putney.

  • I’m in Tooting, not Putney (I was referencing PhilDAS’s last known location), so I could drop down to Wandsworth Town, very easily.
Drop me a DM if you want to arrange that, don’t if you want to take pot luck when you get back from your holiday?
I’m easy either way, but would like to move it on in this calendar year : )

  • Anybody know how much would a repair like this would cost to get done professionally?

  • Cheers! Reckon that would come under 'new seat lug' or something a bit more serious?

  • New seat tube is more likely

  • @dom.m No real idea mate sorry, maybe send Varonha a pic?

  • Well I won't be back at work again until next, next Tuesday so I will just have to wait and see.

  • Think I might recognise this . Interesting to see stripped . Hopefully it gets another life , looks like you could fix that with a new seat lug . Be interested to see if anyone gets this fixed .

  • Checked with Varonha and it requires a new seat tube apparently

  • Can I 2nd dibs it if drew doesn't pick up in a few weeks. Don't really need it but don't want to see it go to waste

  • 2nd? Sure thing.
Should say I’m not going to junk this if no-one takes it: I gave it a good year of commuting* in its unstripped state to know it’s worth repairing - but I won’t do anything with it for a long time, so I think it should be in someone else’s hands.

    Repairs:
I had a quote from Argos for around £130 to replace the seat tube, another £150 to respray the entire repaired frame. That’s okay to me, but I just don’t have that kind of lettuce to spend on a frame that won’t be built up and used!

*edit: Stopped using it because I couldn’t ignore the creaking sound that developed : /

  • Sorry, don’t let me get in the way of someone else taking it.

I would like it but obviously I won’t be back for a few days and it’s free so whoever can go and get it first should take it.

I just meant that if it was still going when I got back I’d take it.

  • Understood! I don’t think it’s going anywhere soon : )
