Shimano shifters jamming

Posted on
  • Hi all,

Today I replaced cables on a friends bike with R8000 Ultegra disc. While installing the new cable, the shifter started to block. The lever blocked so it was impossible to move it inward (shifting to lighter gear). Even without the cable in the shifter, this problem occurred. I couldn't really find the origin of this problem, but it got solved after applying silicone spray (quite a lot) on the internals. So problem solved, but it buggers me that I don't know the reason of this failure. Some months ago, I had exactly the same problem on the left hand shifter. Also solved by copious amount of pfte spray. And I had the same problem on a bike with R7000 105. Is this a known problem, of did I missed something? What would cause this 'blocking' of the paddle?

Both bikes are less than two years old. More or less 8000k on every bike.

  • Do you mean by jamming that you press the lever in and nothing happens to change gear or you can’t press the lever in because it has jammed solid?

  • Had something similar recently and it was the hood not being rolled back properly after putting the cable in, the rubber was stopping the lever underneath

  • The second. The lever itselfs doesn't move inwards. Feels like if I would push harder, something would break.

  • Good tip, will check this next time
