Weinmann single pivot side pull centering

  • Having a real pain in the ass with the above brake. Can’t get the pad to centre and can’t find a definitive answer online. I have seen a park tool in some videos that seems to adjust the springs but want to see if there is another way.

Normally they centre with the two bolts but not this time.

  • Are you finding that you pull the brake in and only one arm moves leaving one close to the rim?

  • Try taking the lock nut off and taking the arms apart, give them a clean, grease the pivot points and put back together.

If you don’t want to take apart put some spray lube in the pivot point and work it a bit.

Also try undo the bolt holding it to the frame hold the brake hard against the rim and then do up again to try relocating it. That can often work. In fact try that first then try cleaning it up. It might just be fitted a bit too much to one side of the rim.

  • I share your pain. Single pivot side pulls were always a pain to centre. Until the advent of dual pivot we were doomed to live with rubbing brake pads, or centre pulls.

Not much to add to above. Use brake bolt to centre the caliper and clean and grease where the arms meet each other.

  • Level the spring / callipers with the brake bridge then use needle nose pliars to tighten the spring (slip off the brake) for the arm which is nearer the rim. Check its all free to move as above and that the brake outer isn't pulling it over to one side.

  • The park tool spring spanner is the only quick, proper method I know.

Otherwise you can use a brutish method - use a blunt tool and a hammer to tap the spring coils from the top. This will rotate the whole assembly around the axis of the brake bolt.

  • Thanks a lot guys. Tried all apart from the brutish method so will give that a go. Just wasn’t sure what to hit.

I think having the outer the correct length will also help.

Will update. Have a good one.

  • If you do the tapping the spring method use the bit of the spring nearest the brake bolt, BITD we called the bar of metal used as the blunt tool a "drift". Don't use a screwdriver as it will dig into the spring.
