  • "Reputedly the first one built" and the frame number is in accordance with the dates, but this is what the person I bought it from said. I have the catalogue and a few other bits and bobs. I have replaced the leather strap to the headset with a nylon one, but kept the original for reference. It was fraying and probably not safe so I replaced and kept for those wishing to get a replica made.

It is just slightly too small for me (I am 5'10inches) having ridden a Royal Large once years ago I recently bought this, which matches the "large" measurements here - http://www.pedersenbicycles.com/specifications.htm

It is in top condition and is fully 100% restored and serviced with modern parts and wheels with a nice silver paint job. Here are some pictures of the bike.

It is 8 Speed, grip shift (modern), hub gears.

I won't say much more. You know if you want one of these unusal bikes. Message me or feel free to ask questions.

    Viewings possible in Ealing London.

  • How much?

Doh, in the thread title. I am an idiot

  • And here are pictures of the components, frame number etc. less arty, more likely to help you make a decision. I'm happy for people to come and try it, assuming you leave a decent bike while cycling around.

  • Reputedly the first one built

Hi I realise you’re just going by the phrase used by the seller, but do you know what they meant by it? As I understand it the Pedersen was made in Dursley, originally, and the pattern is currently licensed to three builders that I know of, Christiania Bikes in Denmark, Kemper in Germany, and a Swindon builder whose name escapes me.

Do you think there is or was a Cheltenham builder at some point? What year does the frame number to which you refer mean?

I’m just trying to figure out who/what/when/where! I’ve always said I want one, come pretty close to buying one once or twice, but I’m no means an aficionado.

One more question: I’m a shade over 5’10, short armed, what about it doesn’t fit your body?

  • Also, whereabouts are you?

  • There is not much info about Pedersen bicycles in general. Of course the original Dursley Pedersens are worth a fortune, and this is a replica, made to the original plans. I have scoured the Vintage Cycle Club Library of which I am a member and most info and books are about the original Dursleys, rather than the later replicas of the 60s, 70s and 80s.

This is a Cheltenham Pedersen made by Individual Cycles of Cheltenham as opposed to an Andersen, Pedersen, Kemper Pedersen, or a Sutton Pedersen (The Swindon one) (http://dursley-pedersen.net/replicas/cheltenham.html)

Apparently Individual Bicycles built 180 of these Cheltenham Pedersens (https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-us/auction-catalogues/brightwells/catalogue-id-srbr10012/lot-2cd361a9-229f-464f-95fa-a4240031c59a)

    The frame number is 011085
The numbers meaning this was made by Cheltenham Pedersen in October 1985 and this is #1 of however many were made. I understand but have no proof that Individual Cycles Ltd., based in Cheltenham, started making late 1985, so it could also be bike 1 of October, and others were built in August and September.

In terms of sizes and my size. I want the saddle slung down like a hammock rather than taught for touring, more of a pub bike for me, though I know a chap who cycled around SE-Asia on one and they are indeed great for touring. You'd have to try it to see if it fits, the frame sizing says "Large 30-33 in, 76-83 cm" e.g. inside leg of 30-33 inches. My inseam for trousers is 30inches.

    I am in Ealing, London

  • Yes, the brakes are indeed 'Weinmann' Not a brand I've heard of, but components can be upgraded, but the frame is the bike really, especially with these.

  • Thanks for the copious details, I will be in touch re: trying it out. Will arrive on a suitably valuable steed ;)

  • You should have said you wanted one of those, I can easily source one for you here in DK.
This one is a bit different though, so I can see the appeal, plus it seems in great nick.

  • This is awesome. Wish I had £900 and any space

  • Come and say hi when you are in this neck of the woods

  • I have said, I even started a thread about them. But no big deal, it’s not been a big priority, just one of the bikes I hope to find one day.

  • Come and say hi when you are in this neck of the woods

One day! However this bike’s in Ealing... seller is referring to its frame builder provenance.

  • It’s a short diversion for you!

  • Sure, quite happy for anyone interested in bikes to come and try and see if they like that type of bike specifically, even if they don't buy, hence posting it here and not on fleabay and getting people who want to offer an old pin and an Olympic memorial 50p.

They aren't for everyone as the seats sway slightly when riding, but I see it rather like a pendolino train, and indeed I get a higher average speed than on my road bike, but it uses different muscles than a road bike I've found so takes getting used to, but the upright position is just very comfortable for those of us feeling our knees and backs starting to creak.

  • Hmm. What's the room for adjustment? I'm 6'2, from your description this seems a bit too small for me.

  • From experience you want a Royal Large size or an Extra Large.

I'd say this bike suits someone 5foot 5 to 5ft10, and I'm 5ft 10 and like a larger than average frame generally. If you were prepared to have the custom seatpost/saddle holder (with longer actual seatposts) built then it might work, but there are other Pedersens for sale that come up for the larger sizes. I'd say one comes up every 4 months or so over the past few years.

  • Okay, thanks for the detailed and informed reply! I’ll keep my eyes peeled.

  • I have said, I even started a thread about them.

    It was years ago...

  • On my list of bikes to own also after seeing the 1903 version in my jan heine classic bike book . This one is too small alas .

  • Yes, it was.

I was talking to a dutch seller of a sixties one around the time you moved to DK. I backed out due to too many bikes. Years later, I have more bikes, but still no Pedersen ;) heh

  • Hi, you seen my message?

  • On my to do list if one day I get to afford a bigger place to house design classics as well as a settee...

  • My 1973 Raleigh Record has Weinmann brakes just like that, surprisingly powerful once I swapped the original shoes for modern ones
