Tour de Fer headset question

Posted on
  • Bought myself a tourde Fer frameset some time ago and left it aside.

Finally got to start on it having never actually built up a bike. Headset cups on fine, and the crown race but then I stick the bearings on and out fork on and the bottom bearing cage looks fairly exposed.

Is that corr ext, am I missing something here? There's another piece that looks like it would cover it , but it also wouldn't stay on.

  • Just checked my CdF headset. It came as standard with an FSA headset
The upper bearing housing (closest to bars) is two part, one pressed into the head tube, then the bearing then the top cover.
The lower bearing (closest to the wheel) is a one part and presses into the headtube. There does not seem to be anything below the bearing and there is no bearing showing.
Could you have the cups the wrong way round?

  • That was my fear alright. . I'll now have to figure out a way to remove cups and redo them.

  • I've found it worth having one of these, works on BB as well if it's press in

  • Cheers. Might have to pick one up.

There's another ring which I think actually covers it, and when headset is compressed it all seems fine but I'll have to go to lbs with tail between legs eventually anyway
