Chris King deal on Ebay - too good to be true?

  • Sorry if this is the wrong place, I can't post in the Classifieds forum. Let me know if I should move the post.

I'm looking for a 1 1/4'' threaded headset for my tandem, and the CK 2Nut comes in this relatively rare size. I have now found this (below) on ebay, but it's from a seller in Thailand and the price is less than half of what I've seen elsewhere (further below).
Do you think this is a fake CK headset, or a scam in an other way?

    The other I've found:

    Thanks!

  • The seller has good reviews and seems to sell a lot of high end items. However, they have 5 1 1/4 king headsets in stock at half price does seem fishy. You’re gonna use PayPal, and all disputes will basically side with you.

On one page it says he’s in the US and another it says he’s in Thailand.

  • PS the price he’s selling at is pretty close to industry cost.

  • Thanks for the response, what do you mean by industry cost? The price vendors pay to CK before they sell to end consumer?

As you say, I would expect that PayPal would side with me if the item doesnt show up, I've had good experinces with that before. My main concern is probably if it could be a fake item of poor quality, which may be harder to prove in a dispute (also because I've never seen a CK headset before, so I would not know how to tell).

  • I would say that I imagine it would be unlikely for someone to think it would be worth counterfeiting a 1 1/4" threaded headset as the cost to set up the design and manufacture it would be comparably high to the number they'd sell.
Much more likely to find fake 1 1/8 threadless and similar.

It may just be really old stock that nobody has bought in years and they're now selling it at cost to get rid.

  • Yes, I agree with that.

Thank you for the second opinion both of you, I will go ahead and order one later.

    Yup.

I think as @PhilDAS mentioned it’s highly unlikely that someone would make knock off 1 1/4th headsets. After thinking about it I’d probably go ahead.

  • A quick update if anyone's interrested:

I ended up placing the order on eBay wednesday, and the parcel was shipped from Bangkok with DHL Express the next day and arrived this morning in good condition. DHL made it extremely easy to deal with all the tax stuff compared to Post Nord in Denmark, and I believe it was even out for delivery before I made the payment.
The headset looks brand new as advertised, and came with Chris King instructions. Judging by the looks of the label on the bubble wrap/plastic bag, it has been sitting on a shelf in a shop for some time.

All in all a very good experience, I would not hesitate to order from this seller again.
