Threadless Quill Adapters, any downside?

Posted on
  • As the title. I want to get one of these (link below) for my track bike but have to get a quill adapter. Do they negatively impact performance at all? Or are they just the same as using a regular stem

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NOS-Sakae-SR-mountain-bike-stem-25-4mm-1-110mm-threadless-ahead-direct/192437476356?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

  • I sold one of those stems on here a few months back. I think they're quite cool but, be warned, they're heavy. Unless you need something with a very low clamp height (which they have), I'd look at something else (probably with a removable face-plate for convenience). Also the stem I sold was for a 1 1/8" steerer, but that listing isn't clear (just in case you think it's for a 1" steerer, might be worth double checking).

Quill adapters are fine, but just heavier than any other solution.

  • I’ve been using them on a few bikes for years with no noticeable issues. I currently have one on my Paconi gravel bike and one on my Specialized dad bike and they have been fine.

I use spacers on both for aesthetic reasons.

  • Was I the buyer? (no remorse here) : )
Yes, not for weight-weenies and I can confirm that wrestling a riser into the clamp without scratches can be a bit of a sweat. A flat bar will be fine.
I love the oddball looks, the low stack, the single bolt design &c &c

  • Hmmm. Thanks for the info. Definitely given me a bit to consider. I just love how they look :)

  • Thanks for the info. The Paconi looks amazing

  • They look sweet. And it'll be risers I'll be fitting risers but a few scratches don't bother me

  • Pic of the bike?

  • Uh. Got a cockpit shot of Sakae stem, no-name headset, Easton bars (scratches, model’s own) and that.

  • (it’s a 90s Marin Bear Valley SE)

  • Didn't I inadvertently leave you standing outside a pub for 15 minutes while my phone was muted? I still feel bad about that.

Glad you like it though and that it looks awesome on the Marin. Funnily enough I took it off a bike I got to replace a Bear Valley (not SE) that I managed to crack through the dropout.

  • Hah, it was fine! You get used to the cold and most of those toes were surplus/just holding me back anyway : )

I always liked the Marins of that vintage and the SE is appreciably lighter than most (but Christ it rusts if you just look at it funny). Matching the Sakae iron bar stem to it is a bit perverse, I guess. Changes planned are:

Paul v-brakes (sitting in a box, might as well)
    Return of the 1 x 9 (currently s/s)
    2.25 Table Top tanwalls
