Frame touch up advice

  • Hey all

I've been converting my Raleigh panasonic into a single speed (white grip tape and brake sets to come). I love my current frame as it is and don't want to strip it down and do it all over.

The previous owner obviously sprayed the bottom bracket area and the Seat/top tube area black. I Brillo pad the black paint a bit off today and it revealed the raw frame. I covered most of the seat tube with a supreme sticker cause the black paint job was unflattering.

I wonder if I just touch up these areas with a white Spray.Bike brand rattle can or do I have to apply putty, primer then white spray paint?

  • I’m guessing it had a stuck bottom bracket and seatpost and the original owner used a torch to free them?

  • Damn, I never thought that could have been the case

  • If you just paint it then it’s pretty likely it’ll rust through the paint.

You could definitely patch it up with some primer and some topcoat and maybe lacquer but I probably wouldn’t bother with spray.bike. Anyone I’ve chatted with that’s used it or seen a bike painted with it says it looks terrible.

  • Cheers for your input there, valuable to know that if I just spray, it'll rust. Should I sand down these areas to a raw surface, apply primer then top coat. Would you happen to have any recommendations what primer, top coat spray I should look for?

I am not expecting a top job to blend in professionally, just to balance the white on the bb and top tube area.

  • Yeah that sounds like a good plan. Give it a good degrease once you’ve done the sanding too.

Not sure of any brands. I tend to use Halfords spray paints. I think preparation is more important than the brand of paint.
