• Rookie here bought some Bankrupt front calliper brake-set for my old Raleigh Panasonic (single speed conversion) and they don't fit properly. Such as the reach for the brake pad is visibly further than the rims etc.

So clearly, I need some clarity/help on what sort of front brake set I should be looking out for in order for me to set up my bike.

I had a drop down brake set but it was disposed off a while ago now looking for a simple two finger lever front set up.

  • cant quite make out what you mean maybe you need a long drop caliper or the caliper youve bought is extra long drop and even it the upmost position are hub side of the braking surface?. The off-the-peg raleighs didnt have tight clearances and allow for mudguards and were typically fitted with low grade components like weinmann brakes so fitting a modern caliper can be hit or miss. Also on quite a lot of these frames you have to drill the rear of the fork and rear bridge if you want to use the more modern allen head nuts

  • Do you mean the drop of your brake is too long? Live dangerously and buy a cheap as chips Weinmann 500 calliper and re-live the braking experience from my era :)

  • Thats it, I've made the explanation more complicated than it should have been! The drop of the brake is too long. My Raleigh did have those Weinmann 500s before for sure, so I guess I will need to hunt for a fresh set somewhere now. Cheers for the shout

  • Made it more complicated that it should be, the drop of the brake is too long yeah. Weinmann 500s brakes is prob my best solution instead of hunting for a modern set up.

  • Measure the drop, buy a caliper that fits.

If what you’ve bought has too much drop then maybe a more modern caliper would fit and provide better braking.

  • A cheap Shimano or tektro side pull should provide much better braking than those weinmanns. Do you have two brakes on this bike? If it’s a single speed and not fixed then you’re better off with two.

  • I had a look and found a Shimano BR-R561 Brake Caliper for the cheap but not too keen on the idea of drilling a hole for these recessed mount calipers as the old Raleigh had a nutted mount set up. It's a single speed btw but have pondered the idea of getting a flip flop someday

  • Tektro r559 - 55-73 drop - nut fitting ?

  • The previous calipers I had on the bike were weinmann 500s and I believe the drops were 43-56mm so the Tektro there would be too long

  • Oh amazing!! Thank you for this link!
