9 speed to 11 speed upgrade issues, 135mm hub

  • Wonder if anyone might be able to help me.

I have a 2012 croix de fer that had a 9 speed tiagra groupset on it.

As these never played well with my hyrd calipers I got a secondhand rival hrd 11 speed groupset. I was hoping to just change the freehub on the wheels (Shimano FH-M525A) to an 11 speed road one but can't seem to find that anywhere. Apart from getting a new rear wheel do I have any other options?

You can get someone handy with a lathe to machine the back end of the block down so it fits the 9/10 speed free hub you have.

Other than that, unless you want to use dinner plate cassettes for MTB / Gravel 1X groups, not really.

  • Thanks Howard,

Thought that might be the case, looks like I'm going to have to find a new rear wheel!

I thought that I couldn't use a mountain bike 11 speed cassette as the sprocket pitch is different?

You’d need the 1x derailleur anyway which presumably handles that.

I’m sure there’s some weird Shimano mid range block that works across everything 11 speed and fits 9 speed free hubs

  • 11 speed shimano sprocket spacing is the same across the range.

  • sorry cycleclinic you have lost me there. Not sure how the above helps?
