• Hey forum hive mind.

I built an old moser frame on a budget last year and am slowly upgrading. Anyone know where I can find a front break calliper that has a screw long enough to go through the head tube on an 80’s frame?

Currently I’ve had to hack it with a ton of spacers while putting the washer in the hollow bit of the head tube. Neither sturdy, or practical! Hack/bodge photos to follow...

Any help much appreciated (don’t wanna drill the frame)

  • Firstly it's a fork crown not headtube.
The calliper you have is for a non-recessed nut - fitting with an allen key recessed nut will cause this issue.
Just use a similar calliper with hexagon headed nut or a calliper with recessed nut fitting .

  • That mean the old style calipers right....

  • No you should be able to use new callipers with recessed bolt fitting. Does the hole at the rear have a recess for flange on nut ?

  • That's dangerous: please stahp!

Have a look at this article, which should make things clearer.

Your frame was originally built to use "traditional nut style" brake calipers (as it's referred to in the article).

But someone has drilled the back of the fork (as described in "Mounting recessed-mounting calipers on older frames") to accept a "recessed mounting" caliper.

This is because modern, dual-pivot calipers (which are "recessed mounting") are much better at stopping you than old, single-pivot ones (which are "traditional nut style").

The problem you have, is that the tube nut (see the photo Si46 posted) is too long for your fork crown: modern forks have a deeper crown than steel ones, so need a longer nut.

If a helpful, local rider doesn't have a spare in their box of bits, try your LBS: any wrench worth his salt, will happily trade one for a packet of biscuits.

  • Great, thanks everyone. Gonna go to my local and have a look!

  • I had a vintage frame bike and used a long drop caliper from blb and monty drill the back off the fork crown to accommodate a recessed nut.worked perfectly.

  • I've got a Weinmann 600 deep drop brake with no pads but it is a front with a long recessed nut bolt. PM if you are still looking.
