  • Hello,

I though I'd open a CP thread for this forum frame that will undergo a much needed revival..

So, to put everybody on the same page: I bought it back from @Thomas63 a while ago and then built it like this:

After a few weeks, a fire in my parking garage left it like this:

I had the frame and fork checked by a local frame builder, everything's in order, it didn't heat that much to make it unsafe to be ridden.

I then had it sandblasted and applied a base coat to avoid rust. It's been sitting for a few months at my in-laws attic, so I've decided to give it back the glory it deserves.

I'm kind of set on the colours I want but I'm having trouble deciding which the scheme, so I need you to help me decide.. what do you think?

    Cheers.

  • Original paint was very excellent. I'd have it redone as was personally.

  • why not original pattern, those colours - black>cyan>purple?

  • original bike was soooo hot!!! maybe thats why the fire started in the 1t place!!!!

  • I also like the fades from the 2nd bike* from the 2nd picture

*the one that stands behind the 1st bike. Sick fades. Made by fate.

  • Actually, I'll be doing the paint myself and for some reason I don't want to have the same colours.. maybe coz it was almost perfect to me and I don't feel able to redo it as good as it was..

And I just noticed that in my first message the other paint patterns didn't upload.. but your messages got me thinking and I came up with 2 final patterns:

    Option 1, original:

    Option 2, updated fluo radness:

    I think I'll go with option 2..

  • Ha! I left that surly as it was after the fire, just added a clear coat: https://flic.kr/p/SYFoZP ;)

  • option 3

  • That is bad ass. Surviving fires seems like the sort of thing Surlys are designed for.

  • Haha, definitely not my cup of tea..

  • Exactly what I thought when this happened! Sadly, I had to sell it to finance another sscx project..

  • C'est juste pour le sauver ?
et si tu fessais ces couleurs ?

  • Save it from what? The frame's ok and i'm hoping it'll become my nice road bike to replace the klein.. ;)

I like the purple on that frame, but combined with that blue not too much.. anyway, I've already chosen and it's option 2..

  • Managed to apply all the paint on Sunday..

Everything went fine but those neon colours are a mess. They leave some sort of dust residue on top of the paint making the surface uneven, sanded it a bit and all but it was too late, the surface's not so perfect anymore.
I don't know if it's the brand (Molotow's Belton Premium) or every neon/fluo paint is like this?

Too late to start over again and lacquered it last night, will put up some more pics once it's fully dry.

  • Looks great in the pic anyway!

  • Yep, looking good!

  • Thanks! Although it looks definitely better, this lacquer really does the job:

I've started the build.. a few parts missing, most of them are easy to come by except a black 26.8mm nitto seatpost, so if anybody has one in good nick > PM..

  • I have a china carbon seat post that is supposed to be 27.2 but has come out 26.8 according to my calipers. If you're interested, you can have it for a forum donation.

    It's one of these:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/ELITA-ONE-Bicycle-Mountain-Seatpost/dp/B074N2LZJN

  • Frame looks ace by the way. I tried to buy this when it was last advertised, but think you must have got in there before me. Even more jealous now!

  • Thanks for the offer but I’m looking for a seat post with 20mm setback..

And originally I had bought it from @Chak through @Thomas63 who brought it to me to France.
I had some money trouble and Thomas bought it, who then sold it back to me! A few months later, the fire burnt it down.. :/

  • Looks incredible! What clearcoat/lacquer did you use?

  • Thanks! It's spraymax 2k.

I don't know where you can get it in the UK, but in France I buy it from here: https://www.maquis-art.com/shop/1-1781-8-Spraymax-2K-vernis-brillant-400ml.html

  • And also, whats the standard method for DIY decals? I'll be painting up a winter pompino soon and might put some over the spray job / under the lacquer. How did you create yours?

  • There are a few websites that do custom stickers but I don't know of any in the UK. Otherwise, through a friend with access to a plotting machine + vynil, maybe?

And for what it's worth, I put them over the lacquer.. they are too thick to go underneath it and if you ever want to change, you can replace them easily.
