So I got some Pitlock security skewers because, East London and all. Got the protective caps to add to them because of all the dirt that I worried getting in and getting crammed into the nut... however the caps themselves have locked after only about a month, maybe two. They were only hand screwed, initially very loosely as I did wonder how the hell the manufacturer intended them to be removed - then tightened slightly by hand as they were literally rattling.

Now I've got a flat on the rear I've got no choice but to address these, and for the past month I've tried wd40, rubber straps + pliers and rubber gloves to no avail. I'm not sure of any other solutions. Local bike shops quoted £20-60+ with no upper limit due to time which is a bit of a silly amount for a student, on what will be relegated to a beater bike.

With Pitlock and Wiggle unwilling to cover this expense, any other suggestions, or anyone got anything to grind down some points to bite on around E London or so?

  • Take the tube out of the tyre with the wheel still on and patch it rather than replace it.
Removing the wheel is for future Nerv- to worry about, not you.

  • I would grind a slot in the cap and try undo it with a flat head screw driver

  • Try undo them with rubber gloves, might just give you the grip you need.

  • This.

Sounds like you haven't really tried anything persuasive enough ... and next time make sure you use anti seaze / grease.

  • Yep grinding is the way I'm leaning, tried taking the tire off and patching but to no avail, nor gloves.
Issue is, getting the grinder, any members got one around London?

  • You don't need a grinder ... a decent dremel with cutting disc should do.

As per @Dogtemple above; cut a slot in the top of the cone and then either use a flat head scredriver. To be honest, you might even be able to do it with a junior hacksaw.

  • Mole grip the fuckers

    Whilst shouting at them

  • @Batt
Also lack a dremel I'm afraid, I basically just have some pliers, spanners and multitools.
Though knowing what a dremel is hopefully opens my options in case there's any about in the East

    @Howard
Tried to no avail (sans shouting explicatives), unfortunately the pitlocks are shaped perfectly to be impossible for thieves and key owners alike, as a smooth cone the harder I bite with the grips/pliers the faster they slide off

  • Heat the end cap up?

  • Forgot to mention I tried heat too actually, boiling kettle and then an iced cloth for the cap, no dice, these things are bastards (would not recommend)

  • got a sharp punch? maybe a sharp tap with a punch on the angle will be enough to shock.

  • if you get access to a grinder you could grind two flats on it to make something to get a spanner on, much easier than cutting a slot

  • just had a look at the caps in google images and they look like they just push on. have you tried prying them off rather than unscrewing them?

  • Thanks for looking but installed the caps myself, there might be another model but these are definitely screw on, no points to pull

    Alas the search continues

  • yeah, just had another look, they screw on to the remaining threads of the skewer right?

was there any kind of washer fitted or does it just screw straight on?

  • I have a Dremel and angle grinder you're welcome to use - I'm by Springfield Park in E5 and will be about on Sunday if any use to you?

  • @Dogtemple Yeah screw on, put on rubber O-rings before screwing on the cap. They aren't very effective, the front pitlock came off with much trouble.

@TommyRides Much appreciated, alas with the journey time from Poplar I can't make Sunday with additional hospital appointments and general exam stress.. which might tie me up all summer to be honest, if I don't get any other offers I might take you up in a few months if that's alright though

  • Might want something hotter than boiling water.

  • This seems like the way to go, if you can't find a grinder then maybe a file would do the job?

  • Do you have a drill? If you could make just a small indentation by drilling then like @TheShipwright suggested you could tap it with a punch to get it off. Do Pitlock have any suggestions? They must've encountered this issue before... Good luck!

  • I also have a grinder you can borrow but seems a bit OTT, a rotary tool and thin cutting disc seems the right scale tool for the job...

Edit: or I have a drill and punch and am based by Limehouse, so happy to lend a hand. You'd just need to get a small drill bit for metal. I only have a 8mm one for drilling forks.

  • or you could drill a tiny hole in the side then stick something in to use to unwind it

  • I'll look into the parts, though exams might take the bike issues over for a while, appreciated and might take you up on it at some point!

And in general thanks for the info guys, new signee to LFGSS so this is in effect my welcome thread, nice to see the activity here

  • If you get it hot enough it'll melt off?
