Wheel building course for enthusiast?

Posted on
  • Built up many bikes but never built up a wheelset so want to learn. Was just going to do the wheel building course at London Bike Kitchen, since it's in my neighborhood but are there any other classes out there worth checking out?

  • Internet!

    Also @arup runs real workshops

  • I seldom build wheels but when I do I use this for reference. the bloke is a bit annoying but it's clear and concise. gets the job done

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTb3x5VO69Y

  • I'm doing mainly one-to-one classes at the moment, held at Racer Rosa bicycles in Walthamstow. It was nice to have groups of 3-4 but ended up being difficult to organise. I can also come to you.

  • I asked the same question a few months ago. YouTube + Several book suggestions and this https://microcosm.app/out/mXg4h built a front wheel with dynamo hub. It’s round and true.

  • @arup how much are your classes?

Or am I better off watching youtube vids and using my money to buy rims/hubs/spokes and a whole bunch of trial and error instead?

  • hey @jerrysk8 if want company doing a course with anyone, I want to learn this as well and would be happy to accompany you!

  • If you want proper step by step instructions then it's £150.00 for the day and you get my full attention all day. I have a set of YouTube tutorials as well. Also, if you don't want to shell out a load of notes then I offer a 'follow along' kind of deal for free. Basically, come and watch me build wheels, ask questions etc. But I won't be explaining or demonstrating or slowing things down. So that could be an option.

  • Trial and error sucks because some errors aren’t immediately apparent - better to get a pro to teach you to avoid the initial clangers so you can enjoy the process.
