My other half used to ride from Thornton Heath to Wallington, I'll get her to sketch her old route out and get back to you, ok? As I recall it wasn't a bad route (I did it with her a couple of times) tho getting around Gypsy Hill might be a bit lumpy.

I'm over in Gipsy Hill, never really go out that way. I think a few of my club may work out that way so will ask them. Would definitely avoid going via Croydon.

Thanks to both, that would be great.
Had a go last night at doing a 'quiet' route, came up with this:
https://goo.gl/pABxN3Annoying how Google cycle routes doesn't allow for getting off the bike and crossing at ped crossings as that would be the plan to get across Streatham High Road rather than trying to turn onto it and then off it.
The worst looking road here is the A237 past Mitcham Junction, but it has a shared use pavement on one side of the road, so won't have to tangle with the traffic along there.

Unfortunately no from my club goes that far, most just to the delights of Croydon. I think the roure you got above is probably going to be your best bet.

Had a word with her this morning, she's a bit busy but will sit down tomorrow and sketch the route for me and I'll copy it. She did say that it avoided all the main roads tho.

Hmm, you have quite a climb nearly from your door up to v. busy Crown Point. Then down Gibson's Hill which is a killer on the way back. Also, surprisingly it's not a road but a rutted farm track at the bottom.
Would also avoid Streatham Vale/Greyhound Lane around Streatham Common rail station.
So the first half would be more like this
(Edit: not actually sure if the first bit through Streatham Common is legal/practical - this is more like what I do)

Nice suggestions, cheers for that.
Definitely gonna try out a few routes.Penistone road lol.
My other half has been thinking about giving a go to cycling her commute, she's a competent bike rider (done cycle training, has a driving license) but not all that confident.
I checked Google maps and Cyclestreets suggestions and to be honest most of the routes look pretty horrible, not sure I'd even be happy cycling them daily myself.
Anyone familiar with this area of London able to suggest a route that doesn't look utterly horrific?
