Drilling Columbus / Cinelli Forks

  • I've got a pair of Columbus track forks winging their way to me.
    The rear of the crown is pre-drilled with the stepped hole for a brake sleeve nut.
    The front is wax filled and painted.
    Can anyone advise what I can expect to find in terms of ease of drilling out for a brake?
    I'm suspecting it should be fairly straight forward and hoping I won't need a jig and a pillar drill!

  • I've done it on a few forks and never used a pillar drill and never had a problem. In my opinion, the most important thing is the drill bit - get a high quality ultra tough one and don't use excessive down-force when you're drilling. Lining up by eye, as long as your careful and have a decent vice, should be ample. Good luck.

    I made up a small steel cylinder 6mm diameter with a 3mm bore. I slipped this in the pre-drilled hole behind the 'wax' bung. Then I drilled my pilot hole from behind the crown through the cylinder. This ensured the hole was dead in line with the pre drilled hole.
    One thing that bothered me a bit though and will hopefully be if use to anyone reading this in the future; the 'wax' filled hole is more than just wax!
    There is definitely some wax in there but the front of the crown is aluminium.
    As such when you start drilling you expect to see wax but actually see aluminium swarf.
    Anyway, exactly as you said, nice and slow with a decent bit and all is good.
