Chainstay wall thickness - chainring rub

Posted on
  • Posted this in the Dolan thread but then decided it's probably better here...

Was washing my FXE before repainting it and I noticed that the 56t chainring I was using has worn through the paint and to some extent the metal of the chainstay. Does anyone know how thick the chainstay walls are - I'm just trying to work out if the chainstay is going to explode and kill me...

  • are those frame designed to put 56T i dont think so. better option i can suggest is lower your chainring teeth...

    best Regards

  • pics?

  • I have obviously changed this now.

  • The frame isn't at my house currently but I'll get some as soon as possible. Very annoying as it has some clearance and I figured being a zen and track crank the flex would be minimal, obviously not!

  • whats the reason why you need to use 56t...pls do tell me

  • I don’t think that’s relevant. The OP had been using a 56t, for reasons known to themselves (only chainring lying around?).

Now they obviously intend to use a smaller one, but have some concern over the potential damage to the frame.

The question is whether significant material has been removed?

  • only chainring lying around?

    thats acceptable

in other words he can still use that 56 and put different bb with longer spindle...chainline will be out and that make weird sound to the drivetrain

chainring thickness is almost the same he used big ring and that make touch the chainstay if continue using that frame will be damage sooner or later....

  • I had a 56t handy :-P The chainset uses Hollowtech II and already had a 2.5mm driveside spacer so can't really alter the chainline, but I've swapped it now to a 49t and smaller cog so that'll be fine.

Should be able to get a photo in the morning. I'd estimate (from memory, so extra accurate!) it's about 0.5mm depth of a gouge?

  • Maybe contact Dolan? My FXE felt super thin (anecdotal, I know) can understand your concern.
    56t though :)

  • Yeah shot them a message, just waiting to hear back. I suspect that they'll say it's scrap purely to cover their own back should something go wrong. I may end up just scrapping it I think. Need to find an FXE frame now I guess :P

  • We have a few Precursas at work where the crank arm has been hitting the chainstay and taken a bit of a gouge out, either because of crash damage (bent crank) or just because Precursas seem to be built pretty ski-whiff.

I know its a bit different and only track use rather than street but there's nothing to suggest any of the affected bikes are going to fail any time soon and some of the damage occurred 5+ years ago.

  • In the end I saw that the FXE has replaceable dropouts which I'd quite like so I ordered another one to be safe. Dolan are looking at the pictures, but I think I probably just got worried about nothing.

I have already shot blasted and primed it now so if they say it's ok I'll probably just rattle can it some weird colour and build it up.

  • Mr Dolan himself has confirmed it's fine :)
