Here's a section that may help. Used it for a mass ride from Brum to London

Once you get clear of London, this is a nice route to Brum

If you look up the Windson Chester Windsor audax route, it crosses my Brum rout somewhere near Charlbury I think and is probably a good option
The more direct routes seem to have a long stretch on tha A5 which isn't my idea of fun

If I was doing it I think I'd head west and get as close to Hereford as I could on day one, then head up through the border country for the next two days.
Obviously it depends on where you're going in Liverpool, but I'd definitely follow @pacef8 's recommendation and head in via the Wirral. I think you can still take bikes on the Mersey ferry, that's a great way to arrive in Liverpool.

have ridden out to oxford on steam ride audax- I know thats quite decent - looking at map I might go oxford then avoid Birmingham to the south - around Worcester say and then up through the borders and in through the wirral as suggested

Forget getting the mersey ferry . You will wait around for an hour and pay over the odds for the commuter service as you will be there after 4pm . Plus it only runs from seacombe in wallasey and the bridge is still out across the docks thanks to dawnus effin it all up.

This is a route I once did as far as Upton Magna. It crosses the 24 hour course so if you know the way from Prees, it would work well from there on.
It was a good route, but I did it in the evening / overnight so you would want to go on smaller roads through Telford and avoid the A448 near Bromsgrove if you did that bit in daytime. The rest is mostly pretty lanes.

seen a few on ridewithgps but useful to know from anyone whose ridden that way
