am a retard - solved the issue - leaving this here for reference tho -
for avoidance of doubt it means remove the drive side axle end cap (QR if you have QR - or 12 mm etc) then slide the cassette onto the XD driver and tighten down with cassette tool - for some reason if you have the end cap on the cassette won't tighten down against the base of the XD driver .
