I'm running 1x10 Shimano on my gravel bike, regular old Saint chainring and no chain guard. Have had one chain drop total, really no problem. I'm using an 11-42 cassette with a rd-m750 and a wolftooth roadlink, works a charm.
I'm also using bb7s on it, make sure to get compressionless brake housing, makes a world of difference! (I used a jagwire road pro cable kit) -

If you can live with an 11-36 10spd cassette, then this is the cheapest possible setup: the 5700 shifters + 9spd mtb/trekking rear derailleur from shimano (same cable pull, so no roadlink necessary).
If you need smaller gears: see above :)
edit: +1 on compressionless brake setup! makes a LOT of difference, much fewer readjustment necessary than with normal wire-based cable outers -

the 750 is actually 9 speed, the roadlink is to move the derailleur further away from the axle to fit the 42 cog. Need small gears cuz I'm unfit.

If you're going 1x have a look at Black by AbsoluteBLACK chainrings, nice narrow-wide elliptical chainrings and reasonably priced. I've had them on my mtb for a couple of years and I wouldn't go back. No chain drops.

Or if you don’t need fancy, J&L from ebay

If you've not already got the BB7s

Very good, i've been using mine for the last month or so and they are great, though they come with unlabelled rotors the rest of the product seems legit.

Will definitely get these if I ever need another pair of cable discs, got my bb7s for 30 quid the pair, so can't complain either.
So, I bought this from EBay for £120 and I wanna build it as a "super commuter" I want to build it as a 1 X 10, using a Shimano 5700 shifter, and rear mech, but using a Raceface "narrow/wide" chain ring and a RSP Mino chaingaurd, To stop chain drop, Avid BB7 160mm rotors, Mavic or Fulcrum disc brake wheels, has anyone had any problems converting Shimano to run a 1 X system? SRAM seems so expensive hence the Shimano route. Thanks.
