Bike Lock Advice Needed - Krypto Fahgetaboutit

Posted on
  • Hi guys, I own a Kryptonite Series 2 U-Lock with the flex cord thingy (pic attached), to lock my Bianchi Pista single speed. I've been looking into the notorious Fahgetaboutit lock as an addition to this, as I feel what I have right now might not be enough...

What do you guys think? Worth getting it? Or Series 2 U-Lock enough?
Considering I live in Paris (very similar to London regarding bike theft etc...)

Any help, advice very welcome, and sorry if I'm not on the right forum/convo... this seemed a good place to ask.

    Thanks!

  • Had the grey one and the forgetaboutit - lost my keys and had to get a blacksmith out to cut them both free.

He cut through the grey lock in seconds. Probably took a minute to get through the forgetaboutit with a fresh blade.

I’d get a crappier bike for round town. I’m sure a thief’s eyes light up when they see bianchi etc.

  • And ditch the cable, they are useless

  • I can sell you a new york for cheaps if you want want one. Have it going spare. Bit ratty but a step up from that.

  • Well, it's arguably a step up from an unsecured QR, but it aint gonna keep your tasty hoops if you lock up all day.

  • if you think you are capable of carrying an additional or heavier lock then something more substantial such as the Fahgetaboutit would certainly be worth considering.

if you do get the Fahgetaboutit then you might want to use the series 2 rather than the cable to secure your front wheel - as @thrasher says, the cable is useless.

it might be useful to look through the locks that work thread. there are lots of options and alternative set ups there worth considering, such as using a padlock to go on the chainring to immobilise the bike / act as an additional deterrent.

out of interest, how long will your bike be locked up outside? eg. overnight / a few hours whilst you are at work / only a few minutes whilst going into a shop.

it looks like you have space available to get the crank arms within the 'D' of the lock in your current set up. if you can manage it, it's always worth the extra effort as filling the 'D' with as much bike as possible makes it harder for someone to interfere with the lock.

  • I'd be interested if @Gianluca doesn't take it.

  • Gonna make a 'locks I don't need, but you do' classifieds thread. It's here.

  • Thanks for your reply @pizzarat appreciate it. During the day, I leave it in a secure alley at work, so no worries there.

It's mostly for when I'm out and about for a few hours. Overnight I keep it at home nice and safe :)

  • Thanks for your advice @Thrasher really appreciate it mate.

Will ditch the cable and look into a new alternative.

  • Hey @Howard thanks for your reply.

I'm based in Paris. How much for the NY lock + postage out here?

    Thanks!

Ah, probably not worth it - it's heavy.

  • Fair enough @Howard thanks anyways mate - it's all yours @pjhobs ;)

  • Thanks for all the advice and tips guys. Went for the Fahgettaboutit (rear wheel & frame) + Series 2 (front wheel) combo, in the end.
    Cheers,
    G.
