What is the cost?
-
• #3
Well i have a spare 28h and 32h hub set , so it would be the cost of rims and a build .
Velocity 24.5mm quill £99 a rim
H +son 23mm £69 a rim -
• #4
H+Son Tb14 in 23mm is what I'm running now, super smooth and zero warp so far
-
• #5
I can tell the difference in comfort between 17mm internal and 14mm internal rims. Defo worth it if you're building wheels anyway.
-
• #6
Assuming frame and or braked calipers can accommodate wider rim/tyres
-
• #7
I'd go 25's. They are reassuringly stable especially if you want to descend fasts
-
• #8
About to press go on some Chinese carbon tubs (38mm) but can't decide whether the small weight penalty is worth the difference going wider. The destination bike is on a diet.
-
• #9
Why bother with tubs?
-
• #10
Let's not turn this into a tubs vs clinchers debate :)
-
• #11
The weight penalty is very, very little. The only reason to go smaller is aero i guess, that's the real deal of new, bigger rims, more aero with bigger tires
-
• #12
It's 100g additional in my build, which is around 10% more weight, a consideration for race/climbing wheels.
-
• #13
Are you hillclimbing or longer distance road riding with flat and/or descents?
-
• #14
Hilly road races, and in the future going over bigger hills abroad.
-
• #15
You'll have to weigh up pros and cons of both then. I have no experience in this field.
@umop3pisdn can maybe advise?
You've got weight saving on the narrower ones. Aero benefits if you're going to use narrow tyres.
Compared to better tyre profile, lower rolling resistance, better cornering grip/stability, more aero with wider tyres on the wider rims -
• #16
If you're riding tubs the only difference, different width rims make is to the aerodynamic profile of the tyre/rim as a whole.
The wider the rim, the wider the tub that matches it.
-
• #17
Definitely go wider. No benefit to skinny rims these days.
-
• #18
Didn't read tubs. Stupid.
Ignore tyre profile etc.
Go wider; faster, smoother etc -
• #19
Tub profile is also influced by rim depth.

So assuming matching 23c to 23mm rim and 25c to 25mm rim, the aero difference is minor? So the main diff will be lower pressure/handling/rolling resistance as per above?
FYI My reference point is 23mm wide clinchers with 24/26c front and rear and the handling has been good.
EDIT the only benefit is 100g of rotational weight in this instance. However wavering towards wide, will prob go wide. Cheers.
Ive seen wider rims getting popular 23mm even 25mm , does the width make a noticalble difference when riding ? I guess is it worth the cost ?
