The frame should arrive soon so I have started to compile a spec and weight list.
Frame/Fork/Headset – Genesis Volare 853 (L) - 2,480g
Groupset - Shimano Ultegra R8000 - 2,095g (claimed weight)
Wheels - HUNT Race Aero V2 - 1439g
Tyres - Clement Strada LGG 25c 120tpi? - 260g x 2
Tubes - Latex tubes - 90g x 2
Bars - Zipp service courier - 300g
Tape - Fizik soft touch – 2mm - 100g – 150g?
Seatpost – Chinese Deda Copy - 180g
Saddle – Fizik Anteres r3 - 200g
Stem - Ritchey WCS C260 100mm - 103g
Pedals – Ultegra 6800 - 260gTOTAL: ~ 7882g
If I can get it under 8kg I will be a happy man but Im gussing its going to be over slightly over when cages and cables are added.
Any advice or suggestions would be ace!

under 8kg
VERY ambitious without spending silly money. Don't keep it as a priority on a steel frame, steel is for the ride quality not weight savings IMO. The older (6800) ultegra is lighter although R8000 brakes are SUPER nice.

I am happy if its under 8.5 tbh. Just aiming for 8 just because..
And I already have the cockpit. So all I essentially need to purcahse is wheels/tyres/tubes and a groupset so I can be a bit more spendy
I am undicided on the groupset tbh...Ive had a play with R8000 and it is lovely though...

Buy it...
If I could have got a Road Logic I would have over this any day. Even though I know this will not dissapoint one bit.

r8000 a sensible choice, what better value than ultegra mechanical. looks are ok too.

I COULD go sora tbh...
-
• #10
oh yeah everyone should go sora. give it a few more dozens of thousands of comments on the dbad thread and it'll be the new eTap

I'd maybe repaint the fork full black (or white) but that is a tidy frame.
sram'll save you weight ;)

almost pulled the trigger on this a couple weeks back and build it with r8000. very keen to see the build

The frame has arrives and it is gorgeous. Tubes are profiled nice and are tapered. Paint is lovely. Frame isn't as heavy as expected. 10/10 can not wait to build....

I think I am going to order the groupset and shit tomorrow. However I feel that the r8000 cranks will look too beefy on the skinny frame. May just go 6800 but get r8000 brakes?
Maybe!

And there has also been a change in the wheel set to DT Swiss r23 spline wheelset.
Theyre a little heavier at 1600g but that is by no means heavy anyway plus £100 cheaper than the HUNT wheels.
-
• #17
Have you bought them yet??
-
• #18
Not yet no, stll having a little browse around.
-
• #19
Hope 20five RS4 was what I went for, from Ribble slightly lighter and cheaper than the DT's when I was looking recently
Edit: ignore apologies you have rim brake -
• #20
Yeah rim brake. Really unsure about what wheels to buy.
-
• #21
Light bicycle deep rims...?
-
• #22
Forget about the weight, you'll end disappointed. Ultegra is surely heavier, there's probably a lot of small crap not factored like fittings, bottle cages, rim tape, paint, etc, etc.

I am not that bothered about weight as my current ride is around 10kg and I love it. However would try to keep it on diet if poss fam

I know, I'm building a road bike myself and trying to be under 7. Would be nice, but won't happen with an alloy frame.
Wheels, there's a lot of chinese sellers on eBay with fully built kinlin rims (same as hunt). If you choose the right hubs and spokes you can get something really light for not too much money. -

Campag Chorus for weight savings and a nicer looking chainset.
SO, for many many years I have wanted a steel road bike...
Kept wanting a ritchey road logic (10/10 would still bang) then an all city mr pink, then something custom...then everything between. Then I rode my mates custon rourke cycles and was completely sold on a rourke....
So I did what every normal human being would do and gave them a call...25 minutes later I have booked myself in for a conversation and a fitting, but the £1300 price tag for a basic 853 frame with a 1'1/8th headtube, bsa BB, basic braze ons and full carbon forks really put me off.
So I went ahead and cancelled that booking. I know youre all upset reading this and so am I, but my wallet could not stretch to 1300 for just a frameset etc.
Then I had a little look on our system and rang a mandem up at head office and got hold of a Genesis Volare 2017 for a very good price!
Im pretty excited as I have heard nothing but good things about these framesets, but on to the important stuff...The spec;
I am undecided on most, I have seatpost, saddle and bars sorted but the rest is wavey. Di2? no Di2? 6870 or 8000?! Carbon mavics or handbuilts? Potential repaint?
Im going to take my time with this build and get it ready for the new year so my budget is fairly decent...around 2K (With trade). So im thinking R8000 and mavic ksyruin pro exaliths....
