  • I just bought this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/132301632604 after literally walking past it in a field in Norfolk.

My plan is to strip it down, keep fork, bars, stem, and possibly chainset but give it a new, fixed wheel set and brakes.

I'll leave the paintwork for now, with a view to stripping, painting and custom decalling in the future.

This is my first build from scratch and definitely my first vintage build, so I'm sure it will be fun.

    More pics soon.

    Quoted, for posterity.

  • Doh.

  • Got it stripped of everything now, bar the fixed side of the cup and cone BB.

Good news was that the cotters on the cranks come out nice and easily. Not so good news was that I had to drill the seat post to get a bar across it to twist it out. It was pretty knackered anyway.

  • I'm tempted to keep the cup and cone BB, if the races are in decent nick. Of course this implies a cottered crankset and all associated misery. It might also perform pretty poorly.

Any wisdom that can be shared with me on this?

  • Ta314 track axle, TA track crankset, and you're laughing.

One day, I'll pop round to my ex's and pick up my Grubb, and sift through all of the axles and cranks I went through to build it up.

The cups are dime-a-dozen - the right axle is like hen's teeth though.

  • I love the Galibier colours though - I had my Comet painted similarly (except with sparkles in the paint...)

  • In the morning I'll ask you what all of that ^^ means.

    Thanks!

  • Just realised that it takes gears. D'oh.

You want a 60's Cyclo Benelux group? Been justvsitting in a loft for years - no idea if it works. Forum donation of your choice.

But it makes axles far easier to find. I've a box of at least 5 that youre welcome to.

  • OK, just realised that you mean "right" as in correct, not opposite to left.

    I'm learning!

  • It does take gears, but I want to build it up fixed...

  • What can I say? I hate puppies.

  • Since the axle that was in it had a double chainring on it, I suppose it is no good for a fixed build, due to chain line shenanigans, as well as the cottered issue?

I think you are going to tell me to find a TA 314 track axle.

  • I hate puppies

Ah. Rattle can it black and then put ludicrously lairy cheap and nasty anodysied parts on it. Think Object's bikes 10 years ago but with a AliExpress budget.

  • I'm thinking gold seatpost, carbon snake head stem, risers, bmx grips, mismatched coloured tyres, a yellow and grey camouflage top tube protector and spinergys.

Probably keep a classic chainset, for old skool style yeah brah?

  • Blue seatpost. Pls.

  • You want a 60's Cyclo Benelux group?

Thanks for this, it's a kind offer, but as I say I am wanting it to be fixed.

I've put up a wanted as for a TA314 axle but they do seem to be pretty elusive. Ho hum.

I'm happy to play a waiting game though. Now that it's stripped, storing it is very easy.

  • Have you asked for help sourcing parts here?

    https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/238801/

I lurk out of sheer curiosity.

  • It's not that old. 1977 I think. But not a bad call.

  • It's not that old. 1977

Younger than me and the year model of the first car I ever owned.

  • 1977

The BB shell may not need a ta314 in that case, and you may be able to find something more recent to fit

  • Man I've always wanted this frame since a mate got one; I just loved the purple and orange colourway!

  • Ooh that's encouraging.

    How do I find out?

    #OGnovice

  • I think the TA suggestion is maybe a red herring, I'm under the impression that you need TA cups for them - maybe @TW will correct me? Anyway I have a few TA axles including a spare 314 if you end up needing one, but I reckon the Pro-Vis cranks (aka Cyclotouriste) themselves are a bit hard to find too, the multiple sets of bolts cost the earth and 1/8 chainrings even more rare now.

If I were you I'd get the cheap copy of NR cranks (Anidel). They look fine, and the bcd is easy to get rings for. Or one of the old school copies like Gipiemme or Zeus.

  • More good info, although I am again not sure what I am reading.

@Skülly could we meet up over a lemonade or two and you could dump vintage wisdom on me?
