Is there a thread?
Such guides often take a screw-in adjuster.

Ah, thanks both. Not sure, it's a bit ahem rusty in there: will get a wodge of wire wool and see once I've dispatched my fried egg sandwich.

5 mm dremmel taps . Dont mash the threads . Then those screw in adapters . Alligators are cheap .

I am not sure what is meant by dremmel tap, but keep a Dremel far far away from there.
You need a M5 ISO (standard pitch) tap and a small tap wrench (adjustable spanner can be used) and some cutting oil (chain lube can be used). You probably just need to chase the threads and then insert a pair of M5 barrel adjusters (brass would look/be best).
If you are near Crouch End I'll do it for you. It is a 5 min job and any bike shop should be capable of doing this. -

Try give the taps some love with a wire brush or steel wool and then treat them to some oil. They might be fine for chasing

Phosphoric acid is good for rust removal too

Right, have an M5 tap, some light oil, a fine wire brush and a couple of long cable stops that I can cut down (and clean the threads after). All I need now is someone to concrete in my 70-odd patio slabs so I can do some proper (bike) work.
Phosphoric acid? Need to look that one up.
Thanks again to everyone. Will post up the results.
Have this lovely (if a little battered) Bob Jackson and it has the weird cable stops / guides brazed at the base of the steerer tube.
I've tried all sorts of ferrules to get the cable seated but I'm sure there must be something specific for this?
Tried searching the interweb but, well, nothing that looks quite like it.
Anyone come across this and a fix?
cheers
Richard
