  • amazing, congratulations to her!

  • wow, amazing, it so adds to what i love about the sport. when is she on itv4? i hadn't noticed anyone different

  • Think they said from next Thursday when they hit them french hills.

  • Great news, good for her and a good day for cycling. I hope the ITV4 work goes well.

  • Great to hear, happy for you Pip. On a slightly related note, are there any out pro-cyclists?

  • Graeme Obree although obviously not cuurently a pro. Possibly Fillipo Pozzato?

  • Nope. Obree never actually was a pro too, technically, so there never have been any out male pro cyclists.

Pozzato was top lads bants. An ongoing joke about how Pozzato and Ciro Scognamiglio love each other. About as funny as when they hijacked Marco Bandiera's phone and posted 'Sono gay'.

  • that pozzato thing was a joke. in bad taste.

congratulations to pippa, really courageous although it shouldn't be.

  • there never have been any out pro cyclists.
Hate to call you out for sexism, Fox, but Judith Arndt, Ina-Yoko Teutenberg, Emma Trott and Georgia Bronzini, among others, are out.

  • Oh you're quite right, sorry, not very woke of me. Edited.

The number of out pro women cyclists raises questions in itself of course.

  • Such as why is it acceptable for women cyclists to be openly gay but not men?

Based on a quick glance I think that in the professional women's sports world it's a lot easier to be openly gay. If so, that probably comes from a couple of aspects.

    a) being a professional sports person is far less of a projected aspirational model for women. If you're already a social outlier then you're less likely to be inclined to follow those aspirational models and define your own.
    b) there seems to be less myopic gender identity typing within professional women's sports and socially being a lesbian is far less equated as being weak for women as being gay for men.
    c) there's a lot less money in professional women's sports. Therefore openly expressing your sexuality is far less expected to affect the contracts that may be on offer to you or the sponsorship you can attract.

Mind you, I'm no expert on this and I could just be talking utter horseshit.

  • A nice piece on Phillipa written by David Millar.
