Yes.

Oh! That simple? So it's mixing mechs that's really the issue?

Yes.

Nice. Cheers again. Will get swapping!

Less facetious answers:
- chains aren't "brand" specific: it's just the number of gears that's relevant.
- shifters and rear derailleur (front are less fussy) need to match, as does the cassette (unless 11 speed).
Reading between the lines (and more carefully), it sounds like you want to run a 10 speed Shimano wheel/cassette with Campag shifters: that won't work.
Shimano/SRAM cassettes are spaced differently between the sprockets compared to Campag, so the indexing will be out.
Shimano/SRAM freehubs have a different spline pattern compared to Campag, so you can't just swap cassettes either.
Having said that, there are some combinations that do work: from memory I think 10 speed Campag shifters work with 9 speed Shimano cassettes: search for "shimergo", there's a thread on here and the CTC forum is a good reference.

Ah. Blast. So, could I swap the free wheels? The Shim block is on a Khamsin wheel (don't ask!) and the Campag block's on a Mavic Racing 1 (from memory)...

Have Centaur shifters, would they be a bit more forgiving?

By "free wheel", I assume you mean freehub.
I doubt they'll be compatible: beyond the spline pattern there is no standard.
Campag and Mavic offer both Campag and Shimano standard wheels, so you may find a suitable freehub as a spare, depending on the age of the wheels.

What is it that you're actually trying to achieve, ie what do you have and what do you want?

Think I'm going to try one of these - an 'Ambrosio Cassette Shimano Spline For Campag Spacing'. Looks like I'll be able to keep my Shimano splined rear wheel and Centaur shifters and mechs. Will let you know how I get on... unless anyone has had a terrible experience!

Rather rudely, overlooked to say 'thank you' for all the feedback and help :-)
Really, really useful to understand actually how complicated this all is. When I took the Shimano cassette (cleaning up ready for the new block), saw there are three tiny thin shims. Guess those are what was used to get the spacing right for the mech - but as the shifting was never that great, more likely that was one of the problems!
Anyway, should have everything set up before next weekend so more news soonish.
Morning. Can I run a 10-speed (Veloce, narrow, brand new) Campag chain through a 10-speed Shimano block? Wanted to try and cheat / avoid swapping around freewheels between wheel sets. Unless that's quite simple? Appreciate any thoughts / experience...
Cheers
Richard
