Single Speed CX Help

Posted on
  • Looking for a bit of help.

My bike I ride to work currently (Felt F85 10 Speed) is pretty much complete to a point I am happy enough with it to only worry about maintaining it for now, anyway.

But now I would like to build up a single speed cyclocross for commuting to work, it's only a few miles but once a week going down the canal / greenway.

I would like to buy a frame and build it up from there but I'm not sure on how much I should budget really as it will be winter beater but I don't want a rust bucket by any means.

I want to have some chunky tyres, drop bars, single speed (already mentioned), mudguards, flat pedals and ideally hydraulic disc brakes. Although I do have some spare 700C wheels laying around but rim brakes. Do CX bikes take 700C wheels? I'm not even sure.

What frames do people recommend looking at? I'm happy to go ally or steel but of course I won't complain going ally and making it slightly lighter.

Sizing is the issue. I'm 6"6' / 6"7' with long legs. My current bike is a 61CM Felt and I have just purchased a longer seat post as original was seized but at a position to small, not sure how much extension of it I could have got.

    Thanks for the help.

  • No one?

  • If you can get one that fits, you could just buy an off the shelf one - Genesis Day One, Pinnacle Arkose, State Thunderbird, All City Nature Boy, Charge Plug. Most of these are pretty inexpensive. It's not as interesting as building something, but hey, it's easy.

I'm looking for exactly the same kind of thing but on the opposite side of the sizing spectrum.

  • Do CX bikes take 700C wheels

They do. 29er wheels will also be fine on a disc CX bike, as long as they're the correct hub width & axle size ( this can be a minefield these days ). Also check that the rims aren't too wide. Around 19mm internal is good for a CX tyre.

I'm 6'7" and get on well with a 64cm Surly Straggler. I am however, longer in the torso, so it might be a stretch for you.

The All City Nature Boy mentioned above ^ could be a good option. Available as full bike or frame only, in either canti brake or disc brake versions. Might be a stretch to fit you. Depends very much on your current fit/sizing on the Felt

Should be able to find more singlespeed CX info in this thread: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/219689/?offset=3800#comment13653470
