1978 Gazelle Champion Mondial Reynolds 753

  • Something very rare and unique I have for sale this time. It's an Gazelle Champion Mondial made out of Reynolds 753 tubing. Frame is used so it has some paint chips here and there. Last owner unfortunately engraved his postal code in the seattube. It has no structural damage like cracks or rust issues. Unfortunately it has a small dent on the toptube which is clearly visible in the pictures. Framenumber is 3213477 which dates it 1978.That was also the first year that the Champion Mondial with the Reynolds 753 tubes was produced, which makes this frame again extra special, since it is probably one of the first champion mondial frame's produced with 753 tubing. Colour is matt black, with gold decals. In my opinion one of the best colour combinations produced by gazelle.

Back in 1978 this was the most expensive gazelle that was available, made from Reynolds 753 tubing. Frameset is extremely light for it's time, less then 2kg. Price of the frame at the time was around EUR 600 ( 1200 gulden). When I bought the bike it came with a Campagnolo Super record groupset. Last owner told me that he paid 3600 gulden (€1800) for the complete bike back in 1978.

    Sizing:
    Top Tube (cc): 53 cm
    Seat tube (ct): 50 cm
    Heat tube: 9.5 cm
    Rear spacing: 120 mm
    Seattube: 26.4 mm

    Asking price: £ sold

  • Very nice. shame it's not my size. Looks like a very early 753 tubeset that was thinner than later years. And excellent thin wall lugs too.

  • Yes. 1978 was the first production year of the Champion Mondial with the 753 tubing.

  • If I hadn't JUST bought a 1985 Champion Mondial I probably would have bought this. I hope you find a good home for it though.

  • weird that seatpostdiameter is 26.4. I had a 753 from 78 (and sold it on here) and it had 27.0mm post. but also the normal gazelle traits like wrapover seatstays and such. have a look at mine from the old f.s. thread! it does look to have the zeus forkcrown right? interesting frame! miss mine, such a beauty!

  • Hi Rodolfo,

That probably has to do with the frame size. Smaller framesets were build with the 26.4 diameter tubes. Bigger sizes, I guess 52 cm and bigger were build with 26.8 or 27.0 diameter tubing. Fork crown is a so called 'super vitus' one.
