• There seems to be a piece missing from this dropout.
Any idea what it is and where I can find one?
Am I just going to have to replace the whole dropout?

The axle can move around loads, and when the bolt is tightened it sort of works its way out of the dropout.

This is an old Ridgeback, long-forgotten in a neighbour's shed. Please excuse the cobwebs...

  • Umm... the derailleur?

  • True. But apart from that.

  • The (replaceable) hanger has been bent backwards a bit. The frame under it may be bent too.

  • Ah so that's what's going on! Thank you.

I've found a replacement hanger. Do you think the new hanger would be strong enough to hold the axle on its own? Or do I need to bend the frame back for additional support?

  • If it is an aluminium frame that is bent then it is pretty much fucked.

  • It's aluminium 😭

  • Clean it really well, look for cracks or deformed bits. If the frame looks ok, ride it.

  • 👌🏼 thanks

  • ...do I need to bend the frame back for additional support?

Yup probably, but as Dancing James says, probably it's fucked.
