I expect we're all familiar with this, but just in case I think it's worth mentioning that the Chater pedal shown above is intended for use with steel cranks - it has a short thread.
Ali cranks are thicker and so need a longer threaded pedal spindle for it to be flush with the back of the crank. However this is not just a matter of neatness - it's not that rare for cranks to break, which can lead to painful injury!

Am I correct in thinking that this vintage pedal would have originally come with a small bar to slot into the hole to tighten the pedal onto the crank arm rather than a wrench? It looks like the hole would remain visible which I guess is no bad thing?
