Borked rear mech

Oops. Odd noises coming from the rear mech today, fiddled with the barrel adjusters while riding, then pulled away from some lights in mid block, 10 metres later something exploded, snapping chain in process. Mech into spokes (thankfully not far).

Anyone explain? Chain snapped causing it to wrap around the mech? I know the most likely explanation is the limit screw and shifting into the spokes but I've put weeks of riding into it since I last adjusted the limits... And when I last checked the chain it was fine.

Mech hanger looks ok and the spokes have lost some ano. I have heard that mech hangers can look ok from this sort of accident and then suddenly break...anyone confirm how worried I should be about this? It's a steel frame - Genesis Equilibrium.

Meanwhile, I've ordered a whole new group as I wanted to move to new Tiagra from Sora anyway.

  • If the hanger was aluminium, it can quite easiliy get bent and need bending back with a fancy tool. A steel one is much less likely to bend, though if you have the tool you might want to check its alignment.

As to root cause, my guess is something (like a mini stainless steel squirrel getting his kicks riding along the lower chain) jammed the derallieur and the force from pedaling wrapped it up over the cassette? If the chain got twisted in all that it maybe split? Can you check on CCTV?

  • No CCTV or anything, and I left my chain in the middle of the road where it ended up! Whole thing is a bit odd. But hey... new group!

  • Bent?

  • That's with the bike as upright as possible. Steel, non replaceable hanger

  • Looks way off to me. As it's steel, it might be possible to bend it back. A decent bike shop should have the right tool.

  • More snaps

This, other than that I don't think it looks too bad. Very difficult to tellfrom photos though.

It can be sorted without the tool but it's worth getting it done right and it won't be an expensive fix.

  • Cheers. Off to the bike shop it goes!

  • you just need an adjustable spanner, larger the better, adjust it on the hanger and bend it out.

if the gap opens on the drop out then wallop it with a hammer to close it up.

    job done.
