Headset Cartridge bearing stuck in head tube

Posted on
  • Im trying to strip a canyon frame that has been looked after poorly.

The headset was very rough, so I'm replacing both the upper and lower cartridge bearings. However they were both well and truly stuck. A few days of soaking in wd40 and the upper came out with a few firm taps of a hammer and screwdriver. The lower is proving rather more tricky.

The hammer treatment led to all of the cartridge coming out except the metal outer casing which is firmly stuck to the aluminium heatube cup. I'm now at a loss as to how to get it out.

    Any advice very welcome.

  • Hi I would use GT85 and a cup remover which will spread the load rather than a screwdriver, what part of town are you in cos I have the tools if needed, based in E8

  • Very kind. I'm in deep dark se13, so not very local, but will keep the offer in mind if I don't manage to sort it.

I'll have a think about the cup remover and grab some gt85 tomorrow.

  • What littleK said is best. However, once I had a similar situation where the race didn't have any portion to which force could be applied to the back to push it out. With some threaded rod, nuts etc., it was possible to jam something across the race so it could be tapped out.

  • I had similar on an old dolan frame. Carefully used a dremel type tool to cut a small slot in the race, came out easily then.

  • heat may be your best bet on this one

  • I'm going to get a mechanic to have a look this afternoon. If he's not able, I'll look into the suggestion provided. I have tried heat. Boiling water, but didn't help.

  • thread dredge. did you have any luck with this? im currently having exactly the same problem. integrated headset so no real lip on outer races to tap. could see the inner parts starting to come loose so stopped. been soaking them for days with wd40 but cant see it doing much. been trying to work out how i might be able to get something wedged into the outer race if i remove the inner parts and tap down on that. maybe a threaded rod with two larger inner diameter washers bolted together.

  • I had a mechanic take a look and he had a tool to punch it out. Unhelpfully I don't remember what it was called.

  • Ye I'm thinking this is a job for the lbs. don't want to ruin the cups in the process of any diy attempts
