  • After having this frame lying around for way too long I today decided to turn it into a bike. But on a budget for once! It's a repainted steel CX frameset for cantilevers and I have no idea what brand this is:

As you can see I also have a HED Belgium wheelset lying around. The rear is a dual sided track hub and front a disc hub, so I think I'll convert the rear into a fixed/disc hub with this:

And then convert the frameset to disc by (TIG)welding 2 of these on:

For braking I already have a set of Shimano Ultegra di2 levers and AVID BB5 callipers, for pedalling I have a Praxis Works Turn crankset. And I'm thinking of buying a set of Fairweather CX by CG tyres.

I am still undecided on the cockpit, thinking about using a ahead adapter since I have lots of ahead/31.8 bars and stems lying around..

Lastly I'll ask for your opinion on the drivetrain since I have no clue what a decent freewheel cog is. Any recommendations?

I'll update as much as possible, but since the calliper mounts need a month to ship the build won't be fast

  • White industries and halo clicksters are the forum faves for freewheels!

Move the downtube bottle cage down a bit more too :)

  • A White industries would double my budget :O

  • Dicta and Sturmy Archer have a wide range of freewheel sizes, and cheap, can be user serviced sort of....
I have a Shimano freewheel to, can't say it's worth the retail compared to the other 2.

Halo clickster is a forum fave.
White industries is spendy but fully rebuildable at cost which steers people back to the Halo.

Should get away with brazing a brake tab to the frame, i would consider a new disc brake ready fork as the frame and fork pre-date disc brakes so not designed to work with them, chat with someone who builds frames before commiting to alterations.

  • Don't worry, done this before :)

Thanks for the advice on the freewheel though!

  • Well, at least that wheel aint gonna get disc brake ejected :)

  • Home builder :) subbed.

On the freewheels, and open to correction.

The budget choices are just that, they can be opened up with a pin spanner (or big rock and allen key drift) and only have 2 pawls.
From memory the Shimano are slightly better materials but also 2 pawls, going up again in price to the Halo you get 6 or 4 pawls and doubling the price to WI you get a similar pick up unless you get the Trials freewheel which has faster pick up again.

The cheap ones benefit from a squirt of heavy oil into them. As unsealed bearings.

  • yeah that was the reason for the flipped disc mount, not sure what way I'm gonna mount it this time..

  • Started stripping my crankset today to get some beautiful grey Praxis Works cranks

  • Cranks cleaned up nice:

Started cleaning up the brake levers today:

Ended up putting them back together again:

    Progress so far:

Next steps is to fabricate some brake mounts and wait for some brake wires and rivnuts to show up.

  • You got some long legs

  • haha! just didn't shorten the seatpost yet and didn't want to stick it that far in..

  • Lean the bike against the brick wall, fit a saddle so we can do a scoblebrick count for lol's :)

    Good job on the cranks.

  • Many many scoble bricks

  • Turn cranks look great naked!

  • ooof this gonna be nice.

  • The old steel on this bike was a struggle for my trusty TIG, but still:

  • While waiting for some small parts to arrive I'm thinking about what to do with the paint!? The welded parts are pretty stripped, do I just spray them black or silver? Or do I go with a complete respray...

  • Depending on overall condition of frame....... if the rest is not too bad and keeping original decals.

I would be tempted to stick a wire brush on a power drill.
Take forks back to bare metal all over, either polish up and laquer or rattle can paint.
Would strip down maybe half the stays length and again, polish/laquer or rattle can, or strip all the stays length and rattle can paint them.

  • I agree with this

  • That's a great idea, I might just go that way

  • looks great but have you reinforced the fork?

  • You can't quite see in my picture, but the disc mount I made goes up the fork for about 2 inch from where it bend on your picture :)
