SEROTTA Colorado II frame restoration // fancy build

Posted on
  • Hey folks,

I´ve really been enjoying the CP-part of this Forum.
It is great to see how the "intelligence of the masses" comes up with good ideas and builds evolve to be even better.

For my next project, I want to make use of this crowd inteligence since I tend to build my bikes pretty fast and often times not overthinking part-choices / certain details enough...
So I´d be glad to know what you guys are thinking.
please feel free to critique part-choices etc.

The basis of the Project is a Serotta Colorado II Frameset, which has been ridden by a former Serotta Pro.
Unfortunately It has some dings and a "splitted" - shifter Braze-on as well as some rust under the (worn out) paint. Oh and by the way: The BB is not coming out. :p

    Therefore there`s lots to do.
The Plan is to restore the Frame, have it painted (maybe original maybe not)
and build it up with either Campy 10s. Record titanium and Nucleon-wheelset or DURA ACE 7700 Groupset.

Oh, and a Flite 93 of course ;)
The rest (finishing Kit etc.) is still undecided and I´d be glad to hear your suggestions.

I hope to have the Bike on the Road for springtime / after the Berlin Cycling week.

I´ll try to document everything and hope you`ll enjoy to see the progress. Thanks!

    Best wishes from south Germany

    Chris

  • Looking forward to this, great frame with some nice details, particularly the internal routing

  • Hello! I take it you've read this - https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/236257/

    Sub'd
    Cheers,
    Matt

  • @funky_d The internal routing is actually not really thought through (regarding the angle, which the cables go in/out) however, I agree. Beautiful details.

    @mattyc Of course I did ;)

  • Great frame!!

  • Might be too big.. 57?

  • DA7700

  • I´m still undecided which gruppo...
However, at first I gotta figure out how to have it painted? I actually have no idea.
Honestly, I don't like the original paint job. Maybe it would do for me with different-color-decals.

@Thrasher @user67593 The frame is 590mm. ST and 580mm. TT

  • Any Ideas for a nice paint job?

  • 10s campag would look lush on this. From the thumbnail the paint looked navy with a glitter effect, so you should do that.

  • More forum inspiration, and a vote for DA.

  • Really like the build! @branwen

I´m going fucking crazy with that stuck BB...
Been trying everything. Loads of WD40, Heat and cold procedure, 2 meters of leverage, hammer...
I really don't know what to try next.

  • Drill it to bits?

  • Had considered this, but it`s going to be pain in the ass.

  • maybe prev owner loctite it? it's uncommon when 2m lever doesn't work for stucked bb.

before torch, you could try to build it up for some km ride.

  • Take to your local shop and let them deal with it

  • @stromo The BB shell has no drilling for Water to come out, so I guess the BB is just rusted in like crazy.
(The frame has quite a lot of rust overall)
I rode the Frame a few Km`s built up with SH Tricolore. just to figure out how it feels.

LBS is no Option... :D I´ve brought them loads of tricky jobs over the years and they couldn't figure it out or even damaged my Parts ...

  • Maybe I´ll try caustic Soda to dissolve the Aluminium BB-Shells.

  • I have had some really stuck bb's in my time, but shimano always comes out in the end. Are both cups stuck, and are you sure if it's bsa or ita?
Also, subbed, but I will unsub if you repaint

  • both Cups are stuck. @Simba and I´m sure it`s BSA

Usually I´m not a fan of repainting vintage Frames (essp. when the Original sceme and Decals is something special) Though the Serotta has to be repainted to save the frame.
Big arreals of the Downtube are rusted underneath the Paint. Also the HT-Lugs and BB-area has a lot of Rust. Further I need to remove a broken braze-on and braze on a new one, therefore the Paint will get destroyed anyways...

But don't worry, I´ll get it done professionally ;) (Velociao Berlin prob.)

  • Lil Update:
Finally got the BB out... More to come this evening

  • Just of curiosity, how did you manage it in the end?

  • Did you scrap it in the end?

  • Sorry for the missing build thread,

I´ve got very busy and didn't quite find the time to follow up on this.
The Bike is now provisionally built, just to get a feeling for the Frame.

I`ll post some pictures next week.

    Sorry Guys!

  • @musa In the end, a new LBS (which I think I can trust) managed to get it out.
(Welded the BB-shell onto a scrap-tool and loads of leverage)
