Inspired partly by something I'd run elsewhere previously and partly by this thread I thought I'd give this a go and see how many of you lot were interested.

    Rules:

    1. A word is chosen and posted here - you have until the same day the following week to complete the brief.
    2. The person with voting privileges chooses a winner, who then chooses the new word and has voting privileges for that word.
    3. Once a winner is chosen, posting is closed on the previous word (although I won’t be asking admins to delete posts that break this rule).

Post up your artwork with the word as a hashtag and also the medium used (‘pencil’, ‘paint’, ‘lark vomit and burnt umber’).
Be as loose or rigid with the brief as you like, do it in 5 mins or work on it all week.

  • Sounds cool. Certainly be interesting.

  • Let's do it

  • In

  • How about a 2 (random different) word brief instead. Gives some playroom inbetween, sparks ideas...

  • Sounds fun

  • Yep!

  • Aye

  • Interesting idea, I like it. I do wonder if it might actually narrow the brief a little, though. There's something about one word that makes it easier to use a less obvious meaning, be tenuous, wilfully misinterpret and so on.

I'm not entirely sure how to generate the words, mind. Last time, I just chose them myself. Total random generation isn't as fun as it sounds.

  • It's a great idea, but as svendhöek says, why limit the brief to one word? That said, I don't see why it should be exactly two words, either. I wouldn't want people to write essays for the brief, but sometimes a few more words may be needed.

  • I vote for one word brief.

/Turns thread into a voting competition.

  • My feeling is that we should start off with one word briefs as i think they'd be a bit more 'inclusive' - if your stuff is totally abstract, you can still do a one word brief fairly easily, whereas 'punk portraits' might be a struggle.

Voting for best of the week or keep it uncompetitive? A way of other people having a chance to choose briefs each week would be good and that solves it.

  • one word brief interpreted as you see fit could do like the weekly photo comp keeps you on your toes to do a drawing a week, friendly competition is cool

  • Nice idea, tentatively in for this. Although, I was in for the photography but only managed 2 or 3 entries. This should be a little easier though, I won't have to leave the house :) I've been trying to draw more this year so this would be a good incentive.

  • Sounds like a great idea. I've never really drawn, but I might give this a go alongside the photo comp. Just as a warning from the experience in the photo thread, mass voting is a bit of a pain if you don't have someone dedicated to it each week, so it might be easier to simplify the system?

@AlexD could choose a starting word, then pick his/her favourite submission at the end of the week. The winner then picks a new word, and gets voting privileges, and so on. You still get some friendly competition, but leave the deciding vote to one person rather than the collective, and hopefully the power doesn't go to people's heads?

  • I was just trying to work out a voting system and it was starting to give me a headache - I did wonder if it would become a bit of a millstone! For me, the whole point of this is just to provide a bit of a kick up the arse to do regular drawing and get to see other people's stuff and other takes on the same brief we've just done, which can be really interesting.

Enough faffing: I'll keep it dead simple - I think the way you suggest works.
I'll set the word in a sec and kick things off.

  • http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=130 many ideas here...it's gone dead now :/

  • Brief is:

    #DELIVER

    Closing wednesday 25th

  • +1 for keeping it simple, that sounds a good way of doing it.

  • Yep. I suspect simpler=more people taking part.

  • Also tentatively in. Haven't drawn in ages so this will be either a great motivation or confirmation of why I'm not doing more often ;)

  • Its all about trying and getting in to scribbling 👍

  • Haha I wish this was the photo brief, would be a cinch for me.

    I like it though.

  • In, im looking forward to this.
