Don't use a pista stem with a bullhorn, looks crap. 17 degree stem please

It looks interesting, I guess... Do you have an example? Thanks

Here is another example of mash bullhorn + pista steam. It doesn't look so bad. I like the red logo too...

What about the frame? I can get a Langster Pro for less than 500gbp, but think I will k*ll the classic look.
What about others components, the 44x20's if is too less for a city bike, if I can improve or change something to get better this project. I want to get the stuff done until the spring gets out.

Are we looking at the same picture? That setup looks horrible. Both aesthetically and ergonomically. Those bullhorns need to be level anyway, so it doesn't make sense to use a pista stem. Especially if you're going to use a spacer stack like in the picture above. Not to mention that saddle angle. I wouldn't take any cues from that bike.
I wouldn't use bullhorns anyway, but that's your personal choice. If you do, set it up like this:
Or with a 17 degree stem like @Netakure mentioned.
I also think you need to rethink your wheels. You're going to buy a wheelset without brake tracks to use in combination with a brake, then replace the hub because it doesn't allow a freewheel, and also replace the nipples with red nipples? Keep it simple. Buy a wheelset with brake tracks and a singlespeed/fixed hub. Forget the red nipples. You also want to use two brakes if you're going to make your bike singlespeed (a front brake isn't enough).

Oh, I've got your point. The ideea was from Bianchi Super Pista, which wasn't a bad idea at first sight.
About the red nipples and complete black wheels, was a nice touch. I will try a shot in Photoshop. I wanted pista wheels because the full black wheel, looks very nice. I have a new pair of Cosmic Elite which I could used them, but I wanted to exchange/ sell this Cosmics for Pistard wheels set + Miche crank or Ellipse, because of the rear road bike hub.
And yes, two brakes, indeed.
"That setup looks horrible. Both aesthetically and ergonomically. " I am sorry, but I don't see so many differences. Indeed, the saddle is not at an good angle, bullhorn too, but other than stem and crank, the bikes still looks pretty much the same. Anyway, was only an exemple, I don't try to copy that design. The frame will be hand painted or Ford GT look like (some stripes)
Any suggestions for a wheelset with brake tracks and a strada/pista hub? Thanks!

Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.
Design wise is up to you, do whatever you like with the bike, as long as you like it - you're not doing it to get "rep points" anyway. Sort the parts you need first, then think about the looks.

On the Bianchi you've linked, there's no spacers under the stem, and using the pista stem means that the handlebars could be placed lower. Note though, that the bars are still level. Note also that this same amount of drop could be achieved with a regular ol 17° stem and drop bars rather than bullhorns.
And yea, it does look awful in both examples, though that's simply my opinion. And angles of bars and saddle absolutely matter in terms of rider comfort, so I'm not quite sure why you're so quick to dismiss that.
Wheels: lots of options. Fixed/free hubs are pretty common, as are rims with machined brake surfaces. Mavic Open Pros are pretty common, as are Velocity rims of many varieties. I believe H+ Son rims can basically all be used with rim brakes as well, though don't quote me on that.

Hei, guys, chill a little, things are going crazy here :) There was some ideas, not fixed ideas. This ideas are just to see what I need and what will have a better fit and what components are better than what I choose. Your POV, your opinion matters, but be a little patient with me. I don't even think about spacers, because first I want a basic start, some ideas from you. Then and if is needed (maybe for sure), I can adjust some things. After that I will run the parts. Indeed, the time is short, that's why I need your help. Thanks!
About the bike, yes, I want bullhorns (different bikes). I have different bikes at home, I will try this time another angle just for fun. Is a city bike and I hope I can get older and be a keeper after the project is done.
Indeed, rider comfort is important to anyone. A good bike size geometry and the rider position is more important that the bike. I want a comfortable position, that's all. "If a road cyclist knows that he won't be racing his bike, he ought to look for the fit that works for his own body type, his own age, and his own style of riding. If your bike is comfortable to ride, you will ride more often, for longer periods, and for more miles. ". Anyway, I think the wheelbase will be a little shorter for comfort and because the bullhorns/city bike.

Let's say for wheel set will be a 150-200E - less is better, more is fine, but not too much. Count a +30mm rims, spokes bladed (are nicer) or not, hubs 28H or 32H, nuts, rear spp/fixie - black.
@andyBmore can you point a store or too for Velocity, H+Son? Mavics looks like under 30mm. Indeed, full black well will be nicer :) I can try it.
Miche hubs are ok? Rear + Front = 90E . A little expensive tho with spokes, nipples (20E), rims, nuts (12e) + rim tape + service (30E), all these I think will be over 250E...
Or other hubs like Halo, Dia-Compe, Sturmey Archer, Surly?

Velocity being a USA based company, are rare in Euro stores, but BLB sells them

Meanwhile, a simple question : why track frames have smaller wheelbase than the road bikes? Example at 54 size: Cannondale SSE has 975mm vs Cinelli Mash has 928mm. For a road bike is a huge difference, 928mm would be close to a 42 or 44 size.
LE. For 178/5'10", will be fine a 54 geometry size?
(photo geometry is from Cinelli Mash 2015)

So the reason people will often suggest drop bars instead of bullhorns is pretty simple: you can get essentially the same hand position(s) that bullhorns offer by simply riding with your hands on the top of the drops, and you get an additional sprinting position in the drops. I don't mind bullhorns all that much personally, but also don't run them on any of my bikes anymore.
The reason people are recommending against the Pista stem is that it has a rather extreme angle to it, and if you're going for a fairly generic level of comfort, a stem with 6–17° with some spacers can provide a lot of the same height adjustments without use of such an extreme angle. The only real reason to use one is if you need a very drastic downwards slope, which tends to only be necessary in situations where comfort is not the primary goal.
Wheelbase I can't really speak to this with the level of expertise a track racer would be able to, but my understanding is essentially this: track sprinters need to make lightning-quick steering adjustments, and having a steep headtube angle, low trail, and a short wheelbase all contribute to making that possible. In terms of using a track bike as a city bike, that same quickness in handling translates pretty well in my experience, which is one of the reasons a lot of people who enjoy riding in traffic enjoy riding track bikes.
Rims: sorry, I'm a damn Yank and thusly haven't a clue what shops to point you to in the UK.
Hope this helps.

@andyBmore Sure it helps; thanks a lot!
We'll always learn faster and better from our mistakes than others. This is my 1st bullhorn and 1st bike project, so will be a nice and maybe expensive experience. Dear pockets, please cover your ears.
I could find a cheaper bike, in some whatever online shop, buy it and have a lot of fun, but this bike I hope will be with me forever. So why should I don't make a personal madness trying to get this bike done. I will appreciate it more if it is done by hand..made :DAbout the wheelset, hmmm... first choice is a pair of H+Son 42SL rims, Sapim/DT spokes, still looking for a good choice for the black hubs ('elp!) and... red nipples. I found yesterday that my gf has red nipples on a Specialized Jett Expert and this detail looks interesting on a black rim.
Brass or not to brass nipples? Or other choice?
Crank : Miche 49T/22 or 50T/23, same ratio as 44T/20, black.
Next :
- looking forward for brakes, cable holder and levers suggestions.
Thinking about 20-25km/h, braking will be less needed than a red22 or record. I was thinking about a 50-60e pair, black or white, like Miche, XLC (because the colors combo - black, red and white?), Campa Skeleton
- a cog 22/23 for Sturmey Archer (maybe?) flip-flop rear hub. Maybe a Miche same as the crank?
- nice looking tyres? Corsa CX, pear color? Or cotton/yellowish color?
Any suggestions are very welcome. Thanks!

Miche stuff is a bit cheap and tacky.
Get omniums or sg75's and have done with it. -
• #19
Thanks for suggestion, but sram is 169 euro and sg75... Idk. Miche is like 120 Euro. Sram 300 is 99E, BB included, GPX too, but I don't like the look, even I am a Sram fan.
Indeed, Omnium is nicer, but...I am already over my budget. I will try to find a better price, but I was no lucky so far.Anyone knows a black cog 21,22 or 23? I find only silvers...Black wheels, izumi black chain, black hub...a silver cog looks like a nut in the wall.
-

you can always strip and polish the sram 300's
a la my bike:

That's interesting! I will keep in mind that.
A lot of questions, a lot of nerves...going crazy.
Can I use Campagnolo calipers with some simple brake levers like Tektro or something else on bullhorn? Not the aero brakes levers I mean.
-
• #22
Any lever will work but anything other than an aero lever looks a bit weird on bullhorns imho. It also means you can't brake from the horns, so worth considering if you're going to be riding on the tops or the horns more.
-
• #23
Yeah it looks crap having brake levers on the flats by the stem. Bar end levers only in bullhorns in my opinion.
-
• #24
Indeed, but I wanna see my bike as a...idk in english, but in my language is called Nun. So, every time some said a bike with bullhorn must have aero brakes, I am thinking about this insect, callded Mantis.
Also, how can I pull the cables through the bullhorn? I don't see any drill in the bullhorn. Anyway, this kind of handlebar was made for pista framesets, not ssp, I will not take my bike into a contest.Too bad instead ppl don't answer to my questions... @edmundro any brake will work? Are you sure? We are talking about Campa calipers. Please let me know which brake I should use and how can I remove the wheel without shimano/sram clamp. Thanks!

Meanwhile, I added a 2nd option. There is a difference of 20 euros between Omnium and Pista Advanced, BB included, but I guess I will lose the classic look.

Hello,
I am new here, even I watch the forum for some time. This is my 1st thread and it's about a home project, a ssp. My first one. And I hope I'll get some help here, thank you very much!
A short description : will a combination of a sport fork (3T look like) with a classic frame, a city bike, for an old man (almost 40, lol), 44x20 (or more?) I guess will be fine for 25km/h in a big city and crazy drivers. And I am not kidding. I hope will be a hand painted white frame or a sport look with some stripes like Ford Shelby GT `69, maybe a white frame with black pieces and some red little spots (stem, clamp, nipples, saddle, seat post, etc)...almost 850gbp/999e. I am looking to get a nice lovely nervous sport look city bike.
Some ideas that I have for this project:
kreissaege flying blue, like a Ford GT500 or Cobra Shelby
A nice Colossi, looks like a old Cinelli geometry
Mach 2. I love that fork shape...
An old nice Cinelli
A nice Dosnoventa, with bullhorn, close to my project. This one looks very nice, but is to expensive. The fork is colored inside like the Poloandbike forks too.
At 1st sight, I wanted a cmndr or Trooper, but I guess I wanted more than that...
Well, if I missing something...Thanks!
