  • After an age trawling the interwebs, looking at going road disc/upgrading my Arkose frameset, I've landed on this frameset reduced on Triton

    http://www.tritoncycles.co.uk/frames-forks-c6/road-touring-frames-c47/charge-plug-5-ti-frameset-2016-p16385

Now I need to decide how to build it up - I'm hoping to use as Much as I already have, but I know that I'll need to sort some extras too.

Main hang up is what groupset to stick on it, im currently running 105 10 speed compact on my ritchey road logic and the Arkose has TRP Hylex with 1x10 raceface, no brand, sram GX mix from a sram bar end shifter.

As far as I can tell options are:

    1. Bring all bits across from Pinnacle Arkose - cheap but I want a more road focussed gearing and then need new bits to build up a commuter.
    2. Use 105 bits and get mechanic disc calipers - cheapish but I've only ever ridden with hydraulics, will I be super disappointed?

    3. Get Shimano road hydraulics - expensive...but the proper job

    4. Use TRP Hylex with 105 bits but get DI2 mechs and sprinter buttons adapter kit - expensive, not used DI2 before, can't shit from drops, but somethings different.

    Any thoughts?

Planned wheelset is Kinesis Crosslight, budget but good reviews.

Apart from that bits I already have.

    Fabric scoop saddle
Deda Rsx02 seatpost (assuming frame is 27.2mm)
    Deda zero stem
Race face cadence bars/Ritchey WCS logic bars

Input welcome. As with all projects trying to merge two bikes, might have to compromise, and I need a pub bike worth of bits left over at the end...

  • 5: Sram eTap hydro

Just kidding. I'd vote 105 with Spyres. It'll never be as good as hydraulic, but gets close with compressionless and proper pads

  • Yeah that's sort of where I'm leaning, spotted the rs685 hydraulics set on here for cheap(er) but that means new 11 speed drivetrain too... all adds up.

Genuine 5. Is two bar end shifters with the Hylex kit, that's definitely the cheapest way to get hydraulics and the 105 drivetrain.

  • Saw one of those at the Birmingham show two years ago and it was our highlight . That had a fabric sadle i recall.

That price dose not include the fork though.

  • No fork? Did I miss that, or is it a very misleading image & description?

  • Frameset non?

  • Worth a call to Triton, I'd be quite interested in a frame set too!

  • Sorry if i misunderstood, but do you not need the ritchey or arkose? Either way it looks like you'll need a new groupset to keep all 3 running, so get groupsets that will best fit the bikes usage(s)

  • can't shit from drops

    Lemond thread >>>>>

This is dying for the classic SRAM ten speed road + X9 1x10 combo.

From the product details I'd have no idea if it will show up with a fork or not. I guess it does say 'frameset' and the geo chart has AC and offset in it. That said, they usually tell you what the fork is and whatnot.

  • I just made an enquiry with Triton and they say that the fork is included.

  • Yeah, not keeping all three running, Ritcheys already nearly out the door.

I'm leaning towards mech discs on the charge as it'll mainly be road usage, figure I'm needing the power/modulation of the hydraulics on the road.

I have found 10 speed DI2 bits on ebay which rekindled that idea....

  • Good times, scheduled for delivery Monday!

  • Already running sram 1x10 on the Arkose...which is great but want something different really.

  • This then:

If the charge will be your 'best' bike it deserves hydraulic and Di2

  • Yeah, I'm still trying to figure compatibility out with that. Seems easy enough to do on the RH shifter, but they don't seem to sell LH climber buttons, looking through DI2 hacks using the buttons as we speak.

  • Can you not use the same buttons on both sides? I'd also look into going full stealth a la:

as long as you're not squeamish about breaking out a drill

  • How Is the SRAM going? Is it the CX version? I'm very intrigued by it but not heard many first hand reviews of it.

  • Please no. These or hylex, nothing in between

  • This is what I'm running:

So yes, sram 1x10 with a bar end shifter - I'm pleased with it, haven't tired any other 1x10 to compare but the range is good, with a 38t front ring it seems to match the bottom gear in my road compact. You could obviously prove or disprove that but I haven't got round to doing the gear ratios.

Unless I keep it really well maintained that often won't shift into the bottom gear though, don't know if that's related to chain line, the rear mech, the bar end shifter or my laziness, or a combo of all 4!?

  • Ha, not going DI2 if I don't have to, will be these if anything

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-rs685-hydraulic-sti-brakeshifter-set/

But that = a whole new drivetrain

  • Option 6:

  • Downtube shifters?
If so, how you gonna mount em, bolt on bracket may look a little untidy.

  • I went from 105 10 speed to ultegra 11 speed and the difference was night and day.

11 speed thus far has been crisp, reliable shifting and quality feel. My old 10 speed 105 would never reliably shift for long before needing adjusting, cables fraying inside the shifter and so on. Was crap even with fresh cables.

    I think planet x had/has r685s shifters and calipers for £370 ish.

  • Yes to all the above, would have to be a problem solver bracket, probably wouldn't look as clean as I'd like it.

Currently eBay stalking for 11 speed parts and r685 shifters which hopefully can use with Hylex calipers.

I bought the frame on in a moment of 'wow, bargain, I can just move kit across to it...' and now am actually coming to terms with how much extra cash I need to put down for it. So much so I've considered returning the frame and just going ultegra 11 speed on the Arkose and the spending on a new set of wheels too to make it a 'new bike'.
