Progress and pictures please?

I've finally decided that I can't handle building up grey archetypes only to wear the brake track finish away on the first wet ride... I can't be bothered to hunt for narrow old ceramics or pay the premium for CSS... TB14 are not as stiff and weigh more than archetypes so... I've concluded I want silver archetypes!
Planning on building these up 3X front and rear to a silver SP dynamo and the rear Hope to share between this and my enigma (for winter)

I'd go for silver open pro over silver archetypes. Retro, I know.
-
• #5
May I ask why? Other than retro?
If I were going retro narrow I'd probably look for Ambrosio Excellight in silver... -
• #6
Ambrosio Excellight would work as well. Visually I think box section rims work a lot better in silver.
On 23s or 25s I wouldn't notice the difference in rim width particularly, and I'd prioritize what I thought looked better.

You should take a look at Kinlin rims if you're still unsure about Archetypes, also come in wide & silver flavour

I guess I'm just unsure in general... I've had a set of wide 3T rims which I really liked but I'm going off the Archetype I've just returned some grey Mavic Open Pro CD because of the wear issues (grey) and fear that the silver version of either could look a bit pony... I'd had the idea that I might buy some DT 460 and mask the brake track and spray them grey/brown like an old Wolber profil - this could also turn out badly...
I'm basically putting off doing my RIBA III case study and all I can do is read about different rims and drink more coffee... did I actually notice the difference between 19mm and 23mm enough to stress about this anymore when I'm only going to go up to max 28c tyres?

How about you sell me the frameset?
-
• #10
That's the easy way out... hmm...
Make me an offer!
-
• #11
Its a shame Mavic stopped making the ceramic rim.
-
• #12
Yeah, but the ceramic did flake off eventually - annoyingly I had some and sold them on not thinking I'd use them!
There are these... http://www.slowbuild.eu/deutsch/aluclincher/pulse-sprint-css-1290-gr/
but £££ (they do other versions of SSC treated as well) -

I used to have some as well but i pringled one and sold the other.

Got a second grey archetype from sigma via eBay for £47 delivered so that's what I'm building... Removed my other from sale on here, the two are yet to meet but I'm hoping the colour is a close match, some seem to be browny olive, others more grey blue... Ah well...

So... I'm now toying with the idea of going 650b with puffy gumwalls, fenders, long drop calipers and dynamo + headlamp on this... just so it is doing something different to my other bike...
I've got two options for wheels, buy these off eBay to try out - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331655975491?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT and http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231689704733?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
or buy a pair of Pacenti SL23 650b http://www.justridingalong.com/pacenti-sl23-650b-size.html
and build them onto the hopes... anyone used these in 650b? are they as much of a farker to mount a tyre on as the 700c version? Also re: dynamo - I've been looking for a silver (maybe centrlock for future disc build maybe) SP 32h hub...
decisions decisions! Any suggestions for other options appreciated!
Cheers,

I'm pleasantly surprised how this is turning out.
Have you cold set the rear for 130mm or "jammed it in"
-

Ha - cheers, very slow progress! and wheel options just got tricky again - http://theradavist.com/2017/03/a-look-at-the-team-dream-stinner-road-with-mavic-open-pro-wheels/
I've just 'jammed' but it goes in without any real fight!
watch this space for a job-lot of mixed 80s campag for sale soon!

So... Spokes and Dynamo arrived to build in to 3x front and rear on the grey archetypes... Still eyeing up the 650b option but reckon new handbuilts are too much of an investment at the moment - I'll look out for a second hand pair or something... Planning to use these wheels for Liege-Bastogne-Liege in three weeks to save the crabon on my other bike - and charge my phone along the way!!
Hope to have them laced and handed in to lbs for final adjustments by the end of the week - just need to pick up some linseed oil at lunch tomorrow!!

I own the exact bike pictured below…
My ambition is to respectfully and sympathetically ‘modernise’ it in a manner similar to this Feather – http://www.cycleexif.com/feather-cycles-magnus-walker-911r
To do this I have collected together some silver sram rival brake levers and rear mech and some 26.0 Soma HWY 1 compact bars…
I will keep the campagnolo cranks and headset and remove the ‘RIVAL’ logos from the lever and mech with acetone and pair with white rubber hoods and white leather brooks bartape. I’ll then get a cream brooks cambium saddle...
I picked up some Hope mono RS hubs yesterday… the rims are the hard part… Ideally I want grey anodised as seen in the first picture^ but the anodising quickly comes off the brake track when used and looks untidy so I’m trying to find some CSS (carbide/ceramic) rims that will remain grey on the brake track for their full working life. The other alternative is to get silver rims.. but I prefer the aesthetics of the grey with a gumwall tyre… or to get low-profile carbon, but this means the braking is rubbish in the wet… and I already have a set of carbon wheels…
This new wheelset must also be an aesthetic fit to put on any of my other bikes –
