  • *I really should have named this thread "You're doing it wrong" but...

  • You're

  • It's a singlespeed you plonker, there is no hanger.

    Seriously though great thread!

  • Google this twat.

  • Best place for it... #gitfs

  • Not uncommon in HK. People mount a bell to satisfy the jobsworth police over here and not always somewhere they can reach it (usually under the saddle).

  • ^^ I'm all for liberty and shit but a mandatory bell on cycles could reduce a lot of shouty on our roads. I've come to think you're a bit a dick if you ride without one (maybe sunday bikes not included). /discuss

  • I totally agree.

  • can people not talk and cycle simultaneously? ringing a bell just makes people jump, slow down and say excuse me

  • Agreed - you can't win when passing horses though. Bells can freak them out - i just start coughing lots from way back.

  • Agree with it being useful in some situations, but find them annoying in most instances, as I find they are being used mostly by people who think just because they are on a bike and have a bell, they have the right of way over everyone else out there.

  • This. Daily see commuters frantically dinging their little bells while flying towards a crowd of crossing peds with no intention of slowing down.

Having a bell has saved me from maiming several innocent bystanders.

Your annoyance is as nothing compared to the death of a family of whales, for example.

  • As I said, it's useful in some situations. The death of a family of whales isn't really an annoyance so much as a tragedy.

  • Furthermore, "an audible means of approach" usually in the form of a horn, is mandatory for motor vehicles. and it is useful. I don't honestly see why it shouldnt be compulsory for bikes.

I remember once having set my old Phillips up so perfectly that a group of 3 peds walking towards me, in the middle of the road, hadnt heard me. I had no idea until the last minute that this one person had the sun in her eyes and could not see or hear me at all.

My bell was all that saved the pair of us from a calamity.
