  • hey guys,
i'm working at a weight-optimized singlespeed build at the moment and i'm still looking for a comparatively lightweight chain in 1/8” size. since this will not be ridden fixed i want to avoid using a heavy duty chain, rather looking for something sub 300g.
any suggestions for my intended purpose would be highly appreciated.

  • Use 3/32 - chainring / sproket then you can use a light road chain and keep weigh low

  • i know, but 3/32 is not an option at this point. wanna keep my existing chainring and freewheel. basically looking for lighter options than the standard 320/330g track chains...
    thanks though.

  • 710SL 310 grams

  • rather close to 350 grams as far as i know. so i'm still looking...

  • further input is welcome

  • I think you're on a hiding to nothing: the idea of a lightweight 1/8" chain is counter-intuitive, bearing in mind their intended use.

As is 1/8" for a "weight-optimized singlespeed build": a 3/32" drivetrain should be item no.1 on your checklist.

I've done hill climbs with a nine speed chain.

If you're keeping your 1/8" drivetrain, trying to save weight with the chain is pretty pointless.

  • Also, how many links are you using? less links = less weight. But then if you're "optimising" chain length by buying new chainring and freewheel you may as well go 3/32 as mentioned above.

  • This thread is dumb.

  • just to clarify that - i wanna keep my drivetrain for now since i'm on a budget. i'm just looking to shave of a few grams here and there without spending too much.
i'm aware of the fact that switching to 3/32 is inevitable if i want to cut some serious weight from the build. and i will maybe do so in the future, but for now it's not on my agenda.

  • What's your BMI?

  • If your on a budget and wanna loose weight to your bicycle. Go climb a hill.

  • shave grams: take a poo.

  • thx for the "helpful" remarks lately. but 68 kg at 180 cm height isn't too bad

  • Your chain really isn't the most cost-effective weight-weenie target.

  • I'd think that even if you can find one, a lightweight 1/8" is going to be pricey.

Freewheels and chainrings are cheap enough second-hand, especially if you sell on your current ones. And decent 3/32" chains can be had for pocket money prices.

What cranks have you got and what GI do you want: I've got Shimano and Campag rings you can have cheap.

  • UPDATE: i may change to a 3/32 drivetrain in the future...
however, i stumbled across the Izumi Eco 1/8" Track/SS Chain during my research. It has a claimed weight of 260 grams.

does anybody have some real life experience with this chain, especially weight-wise?

  • shave grams: take a poo.

Man might not be needing a poo before every ride, however, you can always have a ham shank, and you'll have shed more light than the difference between a heavy and a light 1/8" chain.

  • only really serious weight weenies might consider this an option.
    back to topic

  • According to one review, it doesn't come with instructions: tread carefully...

  • does anybody have some real life experience with this chain

My real-life experience is that by the time you've imported this, you could have paid for a 3/32" drivetrain.

More seriously, you seem determined to follow this course so just do it!

You've asked for opinions and received them, but some lessons need to be learned in practice rather than theory (which is entirely valid).

    TL/DR
Just blaze a trail and buy the damn chain already.

  • Nuke this thread

  • I think the lightest reliable 1/8" chain out there is the Gusset Expresso Chain: 255g for 102 links. With its cut out plates and hollow pins it is about as light as, I think, one can get.. It is also a very good chain.

  • Izumi Eco 1/8" Track/SS Chain

It is not a track chain. For a cheap chain, I personally find the Wipermann White Star (108) to be a much better chain-- and it is even cheaper (despite being, I think, still made in Germany). It is heavier than the Eco but also much stronger-- not quite up to the Izumi V but still quite suitable for track racing. If weight is really a major issue I'd look to the Gusset.. price the Wippermann.. and, of course, ultimate strength the Izumi V.

  • thx for hinting at the expresso chain, exactly what i was looking for. found a sweet deal for it, although shipping from Oz will take a few days...
