Yes, I know what I wrote

Okay I understand your attitude and hope you and your downtube shifter have a great life together.

I wrote: "Ergopower for the rear derailleur & downtube shifter in front", as far as my text wasn't already self-explanatory, what did you expect me to answer? You want me to explain what a downtube shifter is?

why the 1" fork?
-
• #12
Why not ergopower for the front too?
One less cable to split when packing down?
Why not down tube shifters for both then? -

I like the sleek looks of a steel frame with thin tubes and a 1" head tube and I particularly like the straight 1" fork Vetta provides combined with the sleek custom stem.

Form and function: Ergopower for the rear is functional but through 25 years on a road bike I found that I do 90 percent of my rides on the small ring. Rode my Merlin with this combination for years...

Fair play, my Saffron has 1" steerer and it's really lovely. Though it's not custom for me and I have an a-head stem installed, the thought of having to unwrap bars and remove brakes to change stem always sways me back towards A-head. But then again, the frame isn't custom to me so size is always a bit of an issue ;)

Apart from the custom stem for this Vetta project (which, btw, was made by Bart from WINDcycleworks for 1" steerer and 26mm bars diameter) only a few ahead stems look sleek enough to go with a 1" headtube. The Syntace F99 combined with a 1 1/8"shim as seen on the Merlin is one of the few.

OK!

The custom steel stem arrived today and I am very pleased with the result. Made by Bart Veuger at WIND cycleworks, it clamps a 1" steerer tube and 26mm handlebar, is 105mm long with a 6º rise. Replaced the bolts with Syntace titanium and I think I'll ask Fibre Lyte to make a custom top cap because the stem is so sleek the Campagnolo top cap looks huge.

Isn't that a 1 1/8" top cap?
Love the stem! Maybe a tester custom cap would be the solution. They're very nice and sleek. -

Thanks for the advise, much appreciated! The top cap came with a 1" Campagnolo aheadset but it seems they issue the same cap with both their 1" and 1 1/8" sets.

Custom brass top cap in the making to match the custom stem...

The top cap has been modified by Bart at WIND cycleworks to join a Campagnolo bolt and is now - IMHO - absolutely perfect...
Biggest change: worried about the durability of the transparent powdercoated finish I decided to sent the frame, fork and stem to Brady at BCP Special Paintwork for a coat of RAL 5004 darkblue metallic paint with painted-on silver colored "decals"...
