What bearing/One piece crankset help

Posted on
  • Hi

I've not had many dealings with one piece cranksets before but I've been helping my girlfriend's friend buy a bike and picked up a Kona AfricaBike which Kona say is "designed to survive the rigors of a rural beating" and I guess to keep it simple they spec'ed them with a one piece crankset.

Anyway the BB was a bit loose and once tightened was pretty rough so I took the lot apart. Basically each side of BB consists of a sealed bearing unit that sits in a little rubber-cover-sleeve-thing that then sits in a cup that's pressed into the frame. The bearings are shot but the rest looks alright, I thought the bearings would be fairly standard but can't find anything with the code on the bearing unit.

So yeah any help/suggestions on what to do and where to get some bearings would be greatly appreciated! The code on the bearings is 30458-2RS

    Thanks!

  • Some pics. The bearing is on the right then you can see the rubber cover/shim it sits in then the cone nut that secures to the inside of the bearing and the lock nut

  • Its a Chin Haur BMX BB but that bearing is very non-standard

  • Thanks I hadn't looked on their site. I can't see these bearings on there though and I was hoping to find something a bit closer to home.

I think I'll probably just end up swapping the whole thing out for a basic loose bearing BB as it'll be easier to service in the long term.

  • Sorry don't know where to get those bearings and not sure if you know but the black part (with the numbering) on the bearing can be removed carefully to inspect the innards. I've saved a few sealed bearings by removing the seals on both sides thoroughly cleaning with white spirit and repacking them, obviously it depends on how far gone they are. It might give you a bit more time to research replacements. Funnily enough I've just put back into service an old chinhaur from a cheapo halfords bike I had years ago. The BB felt rough but after cleaning the bearings it's fine again.
    good luck

  • Yeah I was thinking about that. The other bearing is the one that's really bad and has come apart though so I'd have to replace the bearings in the cage and then try and press the inner outer races of the unit back together again. Might give it a try and see what happens but I have a feeling it's too far gone.

  • ahh, I did something similar on a headset recently, which was kaput.
As I prised the headset bearing out from the cup to check it, the sealed bearing came apart spewing the ball bearings everywhere. I found them, with the help of a magnet, cleaned, repacked and pressed it all together again. It was still sh*t but at least it worked badly.
As a temp bodge you could swap the bearings? the non DS side sees less load.
I'd say that chinhaur are unlikely to have commissioned a new bearing. Have you tried measuring the ID, OD and overall thickness thickness might give you the bearing you're looking for. Have you tried googling 30 45 8 bearing? I wonder if it's 30mm, 45mm and 8mm thick?
    good luck

  • Yeah the bearing is roughly 30 x 45 x 8 and the 2RS bit is 2 ring(?) seal I think. I've tried inputting the dimensions on the various bearing supplier sites but can't find anything.

I think I'll try reusing the old bearing units first and yeah good tip about swapping the sides. Failing that a new loose BB is under £10 so I'll just get one of them ordered.

  • Ooooh that looks like it might be the badger but I've already ordered a new loose bearing BB. On closer inspection whole sealed bearing system looked a bit shonky so this will hopefully be a better long term solution.

    Thanks anyway though!

  • ^ To be honest, the whole 1 piece crankset affair is a bit shonky. A better long term solution would be either a 3 piece bmx crankset and sealed bottom bracket (will actually be quite tricky to find these days though as bmx has long since moved on from the big 'USA' bottom bracket shells) or a converter and a standard road or mtb crankset and bb.
