  • So, built this bike a bit less than 2 years ago and using it as a daily commute since. It's nothing special but it's a great daily and not very likely to get stolen. Since I bought the well used Bontrager wheelset just about when I found the frame abandoned in my friends student dorm for 30 Euro, there is not much (if any) rim life left.
Since seeing all those nice rigid disc braked MTBs and @Hulsroy's Specialized conversion (which unfortunately got stolen) I was toying with idea of converting this to disc brakes. I am doing it on the budget (ca. 200€), so it won't be anything fancy but will hopefully work nice and might serve one day as a (heavy duty) tourer. Here is how it stands (although back to Flite and cheap Rose inline seatpost):

    Plan is to:

    1. get disc brake tabs and braze ons (cable mounts and low rider mounts) from ceeway 30€
    2. buy cheap second hand wheelset (on the way) 60€ incl postage
    3. buy cheap second hand hidraulic disc brakes (incl. bleeding kit and new pads) ca 70€
    4. get a disc brazing jig machined by a friend (hopefully free), if not resort to the ghetto option
    5. get all the pieces brazed in place back home in Croatia by a mechanic who worked in the airplane industry (wine and chocolate)
    6. get it sandblasted and powder coated in battleship grey or military green in Croatia (30€ and a long ride out of town)
    7. build up with existing parts

Step 1-3 is easy, 4-6 should happen when I am back home doing an internship in the summer and is hopefully doable!

  • Regarding adding ISO brake tabs, I was thinking of adding support tube for the seat stay (need to make sure the stay clears the 160 rotor) and putting an extended v4 mount on the front fork to distribute the force on the fork leg more evenly, the fork legs seem quite beefy, so hope it won't fail catastrophically.

  • Good looking beater. Keen to see how it turns out. What's that seat clamp?

    Subbed

  • Definitely add a brace between seat- & chainstay, there I said it first.

Great project and I would especially love to see some pics of the Croatian adventures, nr 5 sounds like it's from a movie script!

  • @TomvanHalen Cheers, I cut off the seat bolt boss, the double seatpost clamp is a Taiwanese job that makes sure that the 27.2 seatpost which is shimmed to 29.2 seat tube doesn't slip, works real nice. Hyperlinking is not working for me, but it is easy enough to find it in E-bay!

@russmeyer thanks, nr 5 is an interesting one, the mechanic is now retired but I hope that he still has access to his old workplace (well equipped workshop in an old airplane hangar). plan b) for this option is a car place in Zagreb that does TIG welding and brazing (but I guess it would cost 50€+) and plan c) is an engineer friend, who just finished a welding course as a part of additional education for a bridge engineering project in Germany.

Any opinions on the disc brakes, seems like entry level shimanos and avid elixir 5 are in my price range. Is it wise to go mechanical if I decide to to convert to drop bars I can do it with normal levers (shimano cx77 set going for 60€, BB7's just got sold for 50€ on local listing, tektro aries 30€) or is it too much faff to get them working?

  • I love these re-purposed old (MTB) steel frames, and yours looks great!

Looking forward to your plans, all sounds good.

Question about the tyres: do you like them? Thinking of buying a pair.

  • Hydros are much more powerful than mechanical, and less fucking around with to get them working properly. For flat bars I can't see any reason to go mechanical, cheap shimanos are still 10 x better than high end mechanical. I've got spyres and my wife has BB7s on our commuter cross bikes and they're ok I suppose, but as soon as the 10sp hydro tiagra stuff comes out I'm hoping to switch to that.

  • Yeah, Kojaks are awesome, I think it's almost the only "leightweight" slick in this size, comfort and grip all day long and no punctures until now (went couple of times straight through glass shards). I was on them through the winter as well (not much snow though, and the roads get salted often), so if your commute doesn't include much snow, ice, wet leaves or grass go ahead!

  • That's about what I thought as well. I guess if it gets repurposed as a tourer one day it will be with a second hand 1x10 hydraulic groupset.

  • Definitely got overexcited with ceeway order (need to find a cheap frame with oversized tubing which got frontended or has cracked drop outs - read new project).

In other words, steps 1-3 are done.
Bought the disc wheelset (DT 444d rims to entry level Shimano hubs and 160 Tektro rotors, schwalbe spikes tires as a bonus for 60€ incl postage) and Shimano Deore m615 brakes (off a new bike for 70€ incl postage). Will update with pics once the bits have arrived!

  • Nice project. Any updates?

  • I wanted to do an update when I pick up the frames but here is what I have for now. While doing a summer internship in Zagreb, Croatia I had chance to visit Banek Cycles and Hrvoje who seems to be the first Croatian framebuilder since our independence :)
Hrvoje was really nice and agreed that I could bring the MTB frame, Olmo road frame and all the Ceeway materials I ordered and he would check what can be done and let me see part of the process. So MTB frame got the disc tabs, rack bosses on the fork and cable guides. Olmo got a larger head tube, sliding dropouts and new seat stays and I ordered a fork from Aliexpress for it. I really don't know when will I be able to pick up the frames and get them powdercoated, so here are some pictures in the meantime.

and me trying some brazing with propane (definitely decided I want to do a framebuilding course when I have the time and money for it).

  • Cool stuff! Really looking forward to the final results!

  • Picked up the frames and left them for powder coating!

  • Great looking projects! I like the angle of slope on the mtb tt combined with that stem. What are the build plans for the Olmo? Will it have larger tire clearance with the sliders and discs?

  • Thanks, I didn't expect such a good outcome my self :)
Yes, Olmo is getting a Aliexpress fork which clears 35c tires and has eyelets for mudguards, rear end should clear 35c easily as well. Road/gravel bike (to be used as a commuter), may start as a singlespeed with mechanical disc brakes, later on I would try to cobble together 1x10 Sram with hydr brakes.

  • Sounds lovely! Looking forward to more :)

  • Wow, how are their prices? Also there is a shop in Graz with a jig doing some building now.

  • @t0-ster cheers, I am a big fan of your thread btw! :)
@young_gun Banek Cycles is more than reasonably priced, I provided the materials my self and paid for all the work 150€, if I am not mistaken for a dedaccai zero uno frame he quoted me 400€. Oh, really? I still live in Graz but haven't heard of it yet, needed a frame builder on couple of occasions already, so happy to have one in Croatia now!

  • 400 fully custom?

  • Yes, I think so, you could try writing him in FB!

  • Finally back home in Zagreb, the frames are done since three weeks and I am really happy with the outcome (the finish of the powder coat is not perfect, but neither was the preparation of the frames + it was really cheap), also had some vinyl cut for Nakamura today. Here are the results

  • They look great! Now build them up ;)

  • Thanks, I'll take them now to Austria and build the MTB up. Lolmo will need to wait a bit for all the pieces and will get a proper budget singlespeed build with mechanical disc brakes.

  • ye build them up!
