If you had difficulty getting 700c inner tubes, why would you go for disc brakes over cantilever/V brakes?
-
• #4
The surly troll forks has canti mounts as well as disc, so has a backup if there is issues with the front, and not super worried about rear braking being sub-par.
I should really go for troll frame to have canti mounts front and back but going for inbred first as a cheap way to see if i like riding this type of bike.

V-brakes and 3x7. Reliable, cheap, ugly

Not wanting to criticise everything you're doing, but... I had an Inbred; heavy, and horrible riding thing.
There's plenty of suitable 90s steel MTB frames going cheap.

y no surly troll? Too spenny?
Edit: oops - late refresh has fucked me over.

Interesting, are there any modern 3x7 derailleur being sold that aren't plastic rubbish? definitely an option and could then try retrogrouch screw on cassette

No glad of the advice! Definitely helpful as i'm new to all things mountain bike. I've been searching ebay for "retro mtb" for the last week but nothing yet. Are 90s mtb frames lighter than the inbred?
@JB yeah, troll was an option, but didnt sell me enough over the inbred for the price difference but if people are telling me the inbred doesn't ride well it's an option if i dont find an old mtb frame which i like.

How you gonna fit this in your cupboard?
-
• #12
we've started drilling holes in the wall to hang more bikes...

Just get an 90's mtb with semi-decent components, and swap whatever you don't like. At least you'll see if it's your thing. Try gumtree if you feel like digging bargains, or retrobike for something nice

Old MTB frame sitting on 26" x 2.25". 3x8 old Deore LX gruppos are dirt cheap and bombproof. I got bored of risers so tried drops on them. STI's worked perfectly. Then ended up uncomfortable, so went back to Jones style bars. Wanted more stopping power, got some rigid steel forks with brake tabs. Bam Fron't disc. Added canti tabs. Now have front bag. Any old decent cro-mo frame will do, and will most likely feel better than an inbred.
Any Old Kona will be awesome. Big fan of the Explosif's -

And by the way, go tubeless...

This is a pretty good idea tbh, you can't go wrong with an Inbred. Heavy sure, but so are the forks and you always have to pick two out of three (heavy cheap durable). I was thinking of doing the same thing with the Inbred 29er+ECR forks. Anyway, I have a pretty battered 18" 1996 Kona Explosif in MAX OR going cheap if you're interested

Tempting, but need a 16" really.

It looks like the Inbred is only available in either geared or SS options these days. I like the idea that if my derailleur smashed off in the middle of nowhere* I could rig up a singlespeed quite easily. You have also toured fixed before, so might want the option of going fixed/singlespeed/dinglespeed on this at some point?
*I don't have any geared bikes and rarely travel far from my house.

Yeah, definitely would prefer a frame that could be made singlespeed, which is another scoring point for the troll.

looks good apart from using quill stem, i definitely want 1 1/8 (and i've just ordered the surly fork so needs to be now)

potentially get a custom frame made later on.
I can recommend someone....

• #23
After the hassle of my pathracer, i doubt talbot want to make me frame ever again :D

• #24
You can take my Scott frame and fix it up if you like...

I may be in possession of a 16" Raleigh M Trax frame soon, if that takes your fancy? Got all the braze ons
After the difficulty finding 700c inner tubes or tyres in the balkans last year, and being tempted to buy a mountain bike i have decided to build a bike that can both be used for both scenarios.
Spec will be to do a cheapish build first to see if i like this type of bike/riding then potentially get a custom frame made later on.
Main aim to make everything potentially replaceable/repairable in most parts of the world
Current Idea:
Frame: On-one Inbred
Forks: Surly Troll
Crankset: Square taper mtb of some kind, using single ring
Gears: 8 or 9 speed bar end friction shifter
Brakes: BB7 disc
Will the fact the inbred is meant for 120mm travel forks and the troll fork is to replace 100mm travel forks matter?
Any suggestions welcome
