  • I've been working on this for a while now, with some images in CP but thought it was nice to have it all in one place.

So I got this mixed bag 1991 Trek 2300 Pro for the Campag hubs (although the paint might have been a factor too.

    Stripped the bike and had the frame sit around without a plan for a while. That didn't take long as the idea came to modernise the frame a bit with an ahead setup. I had these old straight Time forks that were a really nice match, form wise. And why not paint them to match the frame like the original forks... Nice little project;

That came out nice so I then also painted a Syntace (-17 deg. of course) stem to match.

That's a little bold maybe but I think it's possible to pull off if the build has a limited palette.

To prevent this being too close to my HHSRB Epic Allez I'm going with a modern Shimano groupset and 'normal' wheels. Groupset will be 5800, wheels are a set of 2016 Fulcrum Racing Quattro wheels from Wiggle (the 2016 model has a wider rim) who have a good deal on these.

    Parts should be arriving soonish

  • Fork and stem look awesome, looking forward to the build, also interested if the wheel decals will be peeled away easy (I guess you are planning on doing this)!

  • Yeah definitely planning on taking the decals off, let's hope the glue isn't too nasty.

  • Oh i have one of these, they are lovely bikes. Modernised it will be great.

  • I remember seeing the spatter shots in the CP thread. Lovely.

Did you spray a load of black onto a toothbrush and flick it on?

  • I did try that but it was awfully messy. After some experiments I found that using a spluttering rattlecan gave the best effect (clean method too). I got it to splutter by compressing the nozzle to the exact point paint starts to exit the can. Then spray off the object to see if the splatters look ok and then gradually move it over the object. Keeping the nozzle at the correct compression was the hardest part.

  • Is it bad that I have a real soft spot for old Treks? Looking forward to seeing this.

  • Some progress. Wheels and tires arrived. The glue on the decals was pretty nasty, especially if they didn't come off in one piece. Tires are Clement strada LGG 25mm. Also found a Time seatpost, not gonna paint that one :).

Still need to cut the steerer

  • Nice vision, looks so much better. Gawn be good.

  • looks fresh, not 100% sure about the gum walls on this build!

  • I'm keen to see this built up

  • dibs if ever sold, really realy loving this!

  • So much clean !

  • So good!

  • 5800 with neon cabling!

This thing is gunna be SO badass.

  • Oh heck yeh
    Black everything else

  • This is awesome! Paint came out real good, how did you the sanding and painting carbon forks?

  • Cant believe I am saying this but 10 speed campag will look so good on this!

    5800 is ubiquitous.

  • I was planning to keep the cables black but I might play around in Photoshop to see if neon cabling would work, it probably needs black tires then.

@amey I've been running Campag 10 speed on my other road bikes :). Time to try something else for a change. I also like the looks of 5800, especially for a 'cheaper' groupset. The feel and finish of Veloce ergopowers is a bit more sophisticated than these 5800 sti's though.

@josh Sanding was done with 1200 grit iirc, mainly on the part where the decals were sitting under a clearcoat. The remaining bits were give a once over with sandpaper to roughen the surface, no need to remove all of the clearcoat before primer.

  • Black tyres are definitely the way to go

  • I would go new SRAM Force and some sort of full USA neo-retro build on this one.

  • Force and black tyres would work, but if you can get cables to match DEFINITELY do it.

  • Black cables for sure. Keep tanwalls.

  • ill chip in and say;

    green cables (other decals match)
    black campag everything (including wheels)
    tanwalls

opinions are like arseholes, everyone etc. etc.

  • Nice work so far, how did you go about getting the decals off those quattros? I bought a set and tried to take them off but had to give up, the glue is something else. When I take the tyres off I plan to heat them with a hairdryer or similar to see if this helps. Anyone got any tips for removing some of the residue that's left behind?
