I used to live in Openshaw and commute to North Manchester Hospital, the way I went is along the ncn 60,it's a good tarmac surface,it brings you out near the Etihad stadium, along Alan Turing Way (there's a cycle lane of sorts till you get to Oldham road) I wouldn't go up Cheetham Hill road, the driving standards there are derisory at best! Try turning right on Smedley road,Right again on Hazelbottom road then straight up to the T junction (Old Market Street) Turn Left here then bear right along Blackley New Road this Brings you out near Heaton Park

Marylebone to Lee Valley Velodrome. Can anyone give me an idea of what the journey is going to be like? I'll be getting off a train, and riding over with a decent sized kitbag. Cheers in advance.

Has anyone ridden the Outwood trail?
What's the surface like?
Google images seems to suggest a mix of tarmac, gravel, mud etc. Is that right?
I'm trying to figure out which bike to take with me this weekend.

I should add that it's the Phillips Park to Radcliffe section that I'll be riding.

If it's the ncn 6 bit that I think you mean, then it's tar or if you prefer, a dirty minging dog shit filled bit to the side of it. For some fucking Unknown reason to me, mid age Lycra clad girty gut bucket men prefer the dog shit route, on expensive mtb's.

TBH me and a buddy have ridden from Manchester city centre all the way through to Accrington greenway loads of times on fixed gear running 23's with no issues, even before the tar was laid. There is about 300 yards up near a park on outskirts of bury towards Rossendale that might need walking - depending on how good your bike skills are, it's basically technical single track red route type stuff.
I've a chance at a block booking in Openshaw for 6 months. It's only 3 days a week so I'm thinking about commuting by bike as the job starts at 9ish so going by car is a no-no.
Up to Prestwich is my usual patch and I know it well.
What's the recommendations for Prestwich to Openshaw. I'm thinking Bury Old Rd to the Stockport branch canal on paper but I've no idea what that part of town is like in rush hour. There's also Ashton Rd but I'm guessing that'd be busy at that time.
Cheers.
