  • Hey guys
a while ago i found this "Chesini" trackframe in Holland.
When i saw the frame i saw direct its not a Chesini..
I have been told this is a Raleigh frame and by looking on the bottom bracket it looks like an SBDU team bike…But is has not the SB letters.
Also i have been told that probally this frame has been made by Dutch frame builder Jan le Grand.. ( note the typical seatstays )
Can anyone help me identify her ?
    Cheers Kobe

  • I can't see any pictures but presumably it's the yellow/blue one on Pedal Room.
I think you identified it correctly on there, the 178 means first bike of 1978.
JR is the riders initials which would be Jan Raas.
No reason to think it wouldn't have been built by Jan le Grand because Jan Raas was the star rider and the Teams bikes were his responsibility.

  • Here are some photos @colin2011

Hmm weird i cant upload any photos

    have a look here guys…
    thanks for the help

  • Lovely frame, would love to see it in it original colors with some Campagnolo

  • Colin is Correct. Team Bikes had riders intial, issue number and year. Wow seems most likely was Jan Ras bike. You have a very valuable and historic bike!

  • Is is for Sale!

  • @nutsjesmoar thanks bro ..but im not 100% sure

@Banana753 yeah i have been reading the net and normally pro frames are rider initials.. but i thought all sb bikes start with SB and then the rest..
But this frame hasnt got that..

I would love to restore her
but its not my size and if i put so much energy in it afterwards i cant ride the frame that sucks .

  • The SB prefix was for 'normal' SBDU frames the ones that could be bought by the public.
The actual bikes ridden by the sponsored riders didn't have SB numbers they just had the riders initials, the year and which number bike it was for that year.
A few years later there were a few unusual frames which had both SB numbers and a set of riders initials but that seems to have been a one off in the mid 80's.
If you do decide to sell drop me a PM with the price (though I expect it will be beyond my means).

  • Pm

  • @colin2011 thanks man for the information that very nice… i would sell this frame for the right price.. its to small for me :(

    @Spicep1 u got Pm back

  • Does it have anything stamped on the fork tube?

  • no man it doesn't

  • It has a few very similar features to mine. The seat cluster being the main one, and the fork crown, I believe mine is Prugnat possibly (i may have spelt that wrong) You have seen this before but whatever :)

  • yeah man that is why i got so confused.. first i got told its Jan Raas old frame.. then i got told its to big for him…. on that picture it looks like a 56… my trackframe is 56 center center and 58 center top … top tube 57… which doesnt look to small for him.. but i just got confused..

  • is there a price on this?

  • @poorman not really… its more trying to discover a mystery

  • This is 100% genuine. This is his first bike from 1978. Could you tell me where you have found this one and what the story of the last owner is? Did he got it as a gift or something?

  • hello @HerrJ I bought this bike from a hipster in holland

.im happy i took it away from him and realised i have maybe something " special ' in my hands
im still busy trying to find out wtf happend with this frame..
The son on Jan Raas just told me he is gonna ask his father
And his nephew told me it is his frame he is almost sure….

JR178T meaning JAN RAAS 1 first bike build in 1978 t for track.

  • Hi,

Is it possible that i bought a chrome sabatini pista frame from you last year? Anyway i own Peter Winnen's 1984 Panasonic Raleigh team bike. But this track bike is amazing is really love the work done on the bottom bracket. Very nice find!

  • HEEEY MAN
yes i think you did.. you never replied back to my emails..
how is she doing ? The Sabatini that is :)

ooh nice man where did you find that Raleigh?

last week i found a Eddy Merckx track from team panasonic 1986 from Henk Lubberling ;)

  • Kobe, that bike is Jan Raas his bike. I have Gerrie Knetemann"s roadbike KN 1-78 https://www.flickr.com/photos/dutchbiker/albums/72157641117350084

Internet fora are great sources of good info and proper bullshit

I actually hope it stays in Holland. Please PM me for price

  • @dutchbiker thanks for your reply..i was sure i had his bike.. but i got confused after i posted it for the 2nd time on a Dutch FB page … and by then i was told its not Jan Raas his frame ..
I got confused so i thought something is not right i must be sure..
Now that i got conformation its really is his the former frame of Mr Jan Raas i can think of restoring the frame.
Gonna be a nice winter project

  • transfers/stickers are difficult to REALLY match. I ve got them from cyclomondo but they are not that good. the Raleigh letters on seatube didnt match that good. Original lacque decals are almost impossible to find. if you find a bunch please keep me posted.

  • yeah i was allready looking at some places for tranfers / decals..
    but thats something for later
    first paintjob…

By the way i send you a Pm back
U can always send me an offer
    `cheers Kobe
