Never heard of 650V so I'm curious. What size tyres fit on those? Is it MTB size?
I found with some mediocre Googling that there was a 650W size that Mavic did for an early MTB range, but no idea about 650V... -

Having just measured them, they are actually 700C. The 650V marking must be in reference to something else, potentially to the type of anodising.

What's the rear spacing?
-
• #6
Have you actually fitted 700c tyres on them?
-
• #7
Rear hub spacing from outside faces of cone locknuts, without spacers, is 110mm.
I have two separate axles for the rear wheel, one is 140mm, other one is 125mm, also plenty of spacers, so could accommodate frame with wider spacing. -

Have fitted some Vittoria 700c tyres on the rims, which were a very tight fit. I've read that sometimes different tyre/rim combinations can work better than others in terms of fit.

are these tubulars??
-
• #10
Though this question is a bit besides the point, what kind of width tyres?
If the rim diameter is appropropriate for 700c tyres then it's only 700c tyres that will work on these rims when we're talking about bead seat diameter.
Anyway, interesting thing this 650v, if confusing. I'm gonna ask Graham at Vintage Bike Cave to see if he knows anything about what the designation may mean. -

They are clinchers, not tubulars.

braking surface been used?
-
• #13
The tyres I fitted were 25mm.
Fantastic, I'd be keen to hear if he has any insights. -
• #14
Braking surface on both rims has been used. This has naturally rubbed off some of the anodising, both are still in good condition however.

Hi
I reckon (but don't know) that it may refer to the voltage used for the anodizing, since anodizing requires an electric current to be passed throught the object, right? -
• #16
Interesting idea, but I don't know enough about anodisation processes to say, as in, what would be the voltage necessary for a 700c rim.
This is something I will be looking into soon, coincidentally, as I want to remove the anodising from some old hubs and perhaps anodise them a different colour. -
• #17
I don't think you'd want 650v worth of anodising. 12v is more like it.

MA40's were damn good rims. Strong and reasonably light. Perfect for commuting. Nice pair of hoops for a 80's build.
Tried Retrobike?

I'll take them if they have 36 spokes. PM for arranging... Alex
