  • Seems like forever that i've been chopping and changing frames searching for the right size or just plain bored.

anyway, finally settled on a 54cm and have stopped messing around with super flexible frames and got my self an old CAAD2 roadie. Pics to follow, but its a black and yellow job that i cant find in any of the catalogs online, but from the age (98) and spec ( cro-mo forks) it looks like it was an R200.

I've kept the same gruppo for time now, DA 7700, so that will be the running gear. With Mavic CXP 30 Rims on the DA 7700 hubs. That means a period correct build will be the target.

  • Okay, so period correct has fallen away already, Swapped out the DA 7410/7700 seatpost as an option as they are so hard to come by and keep breaking. Went with a thomson instead, like anyone will notice.

Grabbed some Time forks from @jdmitch, which will look so fresh but that does mean i have to source a threadless headset and Ahead stem.

  • Will check my cupboard - may have a 1" aheadset lying around somewhere
Good choice on the forks btw - was going to suggest the same.

  • Thanks buddy, got one from @Borek but the cups are too deep!

turns out the headtube has a flange, like a reverse butting so if the cups are too big, you cant insert it all the way ( double entendre alert!!)

Stem is sorted now, Ritchet Complite. :)

  • Yeah - found it, a (boxed) black Cane creak SC1 - cup flanges are 8.37mm if that helps?

  • Ohhhhhhh. I'll measure up.

  • Well, that's a headset sorted, thanks to @danb

It's black, whilst the stem and everything else is silver, but I don't think it will matter.

Sourced some bars as well, 3T curva start period perfect. 👌

  • Hey! Is this for sale?!

  • nope, not even finished building it yet!

  • I don't mind. How much?

  • sigh.... it seems i'm destined to find weird shit when it comes to bikes.

So, after @danb hooked me up with the Cane Creek SC1, tried to fit the crown race, and guess what, the steerer is only bloody 27mm! arrrgh!!!!!
1" threadless italian or jis headset, like hens teeth mate.

Faced with the choice of either:

    1) buying a new italian headset and having the forks threaded (£40 per inch!)
    2) filing down the steerer so the crown race will fit.

I went for the latter, and it turned out pretty well. Got some emery paper, fine grade and wrapped a small amount tightly round the tube, with some tape to fix it.

an evening of filing, measuring with some calipers and changing the paper a few times and I have this,

It's pretty much 26.45mm at its widest, so just about the right size. Thankfully it fits!

    Result!!

Stem is also here, you can tell its old as they put the wording so that it reads upside down if you don't want mega rise.

  • You damage steerer? I am out.

  • Nope, I fixed the steerer and I wasn't selling it anyway.

This is the current projects section, not the for sale section.

  • Structuals is bad now. GLWS

  • are you on drugs?

the "structurals" is fine, 0.6mm came off the steerer collar for the crownrace.

also for the last time, i'm not selling it. SRSLY this is probaly just @monkdagola winding me up.... :)

  • I am not the monkadgola and no on drugs.did he do the structuals on you bike?

  • What the hell?

That Tiem fork is sick though, super matchy matchy.

  • Looks like whoever did the structurals has fucked it, shame about that as it was looking so promising.

  • surprise random update.

pretty much done now, picked up a 7700 crankset and the 7710 BB for to complete the gruppo, which makes me happy.

needs a little trimming on the steerer, but that can wait. better pics soon.

  • Thread is lolz. Bike is looking smart though, could do with some better pictures!

  • Was loving this thread but it's lost me since the structuals got fucked up... sorry.

  • Its all about dem structurals. Apparently.

  • heehee. great thread this. and awesome little build too

  • Looking good Matt!!

  • This thread is always good for a laugh. Structurals - wtf?

You got the newer 7700 cranks on it now dude?
